This is exactly what has been going on. The Left has driven the cultural narrative for decades. When normal America started to push back against and, more importantly, make fun of liberalism and its stupidity the Left could not tolerate it. Started with Rush in the early 90s and really picked up steam when The Donald arrived on the political scene. They overtly try to squash resistance with things like corporate censorship (Reddit, FB, pre-Elon Twitter, Google search algorithms, etc), propagandizing news and information, and passively with statements like "just ignore it", "why does it bother you?" and the like.
