quote:

"I Won't Be Marginalized"

"It wasn’t their words, it’s that I started to believe them," Tran began her piece. "Their words seemed to confirm what growing up as a woman and a person of color already taught me: that I belonged in margins and spaces, valid only as a minor character in their lives and stories."

She continued, "Their words reinforced a narrative I had heard my whole life: that I was 'other,' that I didn’t belong, that I wasn’t good enough, simply because I wasn’t like them. And that feeling, I realize now, was, and is, shame, a shame for the things that made me different, a shame for the culture from which I came from. And to me, the most disappointing thing was that I felt it at all."

"I want to live in a world where children of color don’t spend their entire adolescence wishing to be white," Tran wrote. "I want to live in a world where women are not subjected to scrutiny for their appearance, or their actions, or their general existence.

If you don't want to be ridiculed for your lifestyle choices, don't post about them on social media.

Then maybe we can come to some mutual understanding where you won't live in the Star Wars world?

I mean...her character basically didn't belong in that movie. I get that fans obviously went overboard in attacking her personally, but...let's be real. That character was the embodiment of what is largely wrong with where they have taken Star Wars.

As far as I know, no one has put Daisy Ridley on blast for being in Star Wars and having a vagina. I THINK it might have more to do with her character and less to do with her genitals and racial background.

I’ll put it to you this way. Her character made me want Jar Jar Binks back.

not only that

it's really sad that she's making this out to be an issue with her identity when she was only cast for that identity, b/c Disney was trying to yellowface Star Wars to appeal to Chinese audiences. and they did it in the stupidest way possible (going with just some asian rather than a Chinese person. that matters in China, not so much in the less racist US)

she's basically being manipulated to be used as a token in the most ignorantly racist way to appeal to some of the biggest racists on earth

so...yay for her?

I mean, I think her treatment on social media was horrible, but it has literally nothing to do with race.

So women can use their appearance at anytime for gain but not be criticized for it.

It was disgusting people went after her personally. As much as I disagree with her character and what it represented, why should I take that out on her?

i agree it was pointless and irrational, but that's what you leave yourself against if you do things like star in major movies and maintain public social media accounts. if you want to be on social media and private, there are easy ways to do it

I don’t hate Rose because she is Asian. I hate her because her only advice in the whole movie was you can’t win a war by killing the bad guys.

That’s literally the best way to win!

they keep saying this yet i have never seen any example of this. I remember see and still see today teachers helping the ones that dont fit in to try and fit it in any way possible. I have never seen a teacher say "You dont fit in so you dont belong here"

why not. White culture is great! white culture leads to success look at all the immigrants that have come to america and lived the american dream and had success adhering to the white culture. It should be celebrated.

it's one of those hypocrisies

"White culture" is seen as oppressive because marginalized people aren't allowed to promote their own culture

however, in many cases, that culture is much more inclusive/racist/prejudiced

...especially asian cultures

within asian cultures, they're even super duper racist. white people are far less racist to Vietnamese people than Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc people. yet we're supposed to criticize "white culture" in order to promote those cultures?

it makes no sense when examined

You shouldn't. But...people are generally assholes. and now that regular old idiots can frick with "celebrities" and literally reach them on their personal phones, many will...and they'll do it in the most aggressive and provocative way possible just to get a rise or reaction out of them. Such is the world will live in in 2018.

As SFP, there's nothing she could do about what people would have said about her on their own social media or on the internet in general...but she sure as shite could have stopped her own social media accounts from blowing up with that kind of crap if that had been her desire.

I think she's describing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
