I thought it was good but not great. I expected it to be a little deeper/more thought-provoking. I assumed that a significant part of the movie would be about Truman trying to find out the truth, but I didn't think that would be what the whole movie is basically about. I think they did a great job showing us how the show operated and how the public viewed it, but could have gotten a little deeper into themes of what "real" means, what is "real," purpose of living, the mentality of voyeurs, etc...

Did anyone else pick up Truman = True Man?

Obviously. You're supposed to get that simply from reading the title, in that his is the only true man in a real world. It's aptly named.

But keep in mind when this movie was made. It was made in 1997. It was visionary for the early 21st century. The theme of the movie is the public's willingness for escapism regardless of the fricked up consequences. It really saw the coming century.

You do have a point in that there should have been a sequel that examined that theme although it had no room in the original. It would have been fantastic to take off right where the original left off in examining Truman's relationship with Sylvia, Marlon (the others betrayed him to such a degree beyond any recovery), the outside world, and what the studio would do to make up for Truman escaping. It could have been excellent if they took the sequel in the direction you are upset it didn't go in. Call it "The Truman Life".

Totally agree. Sort of like Idiocracy in how prophetic it was.

You're probably right there just wasn't enough room to get into anything else. Still a little disappointed though.

There should have been a Truman Show sequel. Kind of like following up on Fredo talking out against Michael in the original Godfather, there should have been a major follow-up on this scene, where Marlon explains how he will never betray him, and when Truman realizes Marlon is in on it too. Should be a bit more than an escape from him in the long run and a major confrontation having grown up with him as his best friend and betraying him like this: LINK

Truman Show is fun but...

I mean, who auditions to be the wife?

You want fame that bad...you become a whore for life and live in a bubble - on purpose?

Your job becomes your entire life? And it turns out, she didn't even like Truman. Who signs up for that?

Guarantee that ninety percent of the "models" on social media would sign that contact in a second.

Maybe I'm misremembering but didn't they imply she largely avoided "wifely duties"?

A horrible woman who had no intention of staying on past her 30s. She got 20K every time she had sex with Truman. It's more the parents and her that I see as 100% irredeemable.

It's why the sequel would be interesting, given that Truman wouldn't want anything to do with his parents and wife. But Marlon who was trapped in the same reality almost as long as he had but only self aware of what was going on actually would want something to do with Truman and ask for his forgiveness. I think that among several other things could make for a great sequel.

Not great? You're in for a pretty big disappointment when you pop in that year's similarly themed EdTV then.

Yeah you're right...I'm sure she had a short-term contract...she would play the wife for 10 years and then be killed off...like the Dad and be set for life financially. That's the only thing that makes sense, even for a whore.

(And I've never heard the implication that Truman and his wife didn't have sex...that's beyond crazy talk...or suspension of disbelief. I mean, Truman's a regular guy right? He pines over girls.

He didn't enter the Priesthood.)

Yes, the "true man" thing is pretty well-known.

I love the movie -- I've seen it a half-dozen times at least -- but I think you may be asking for something the movie isn't geared to do. It's a dramedy, to be sure, but it doesn't try to get as dark as the issues you're bringing up would likely get. In the end, it's a character-driven narrative that wants the audience to enjoy and empathize with Truman's journey to 'freedom'. Certain larger questions are raised, of course, and we can't escape the issues of ethics even if we want to. But the addition of too much pathos and philosophy would weigh the movie down to the point where it simply wouldn't be the same kind of movie.

Most of them get shite and pissed on in Arabian countries for 3k a pop. And porn stars make pennies to get triple gaped by 20 inch mandingos.

Finding a women to give missionary once a month would be easier than finding a college student with a "proficiency in Microsoft word" on their resume.

Yeah but, porn stars go home to coke and blow and their abusive boyfriends.

It's just...one of the most incomprehensible jobs.

"Looking for model/actress. Must be attractive and telegenic. Must be able to sell the shite out of any product. Must pretend to fall in love with guy you are not in love with. Must frick him like any wife would normally do. Must be able to cook. Must live in a giant bubble and never see your family/relatives for at least 10 years. Must be okay knowing that the entire world knows you as a total whore for the rest of your life."

I watched this movie for the first time about a year ago. When it was over I was like "whoever wrote this is a damn genius". Thought it was a great movie

for when it was released, this movie was ahead of its time.

I think this was one of Laura Linney's hottest roles. Of course, she was a horrible person. The role of the wife could have went several ways. She could have been a good person and actually fell in love with Truman. Then felt guilty for lying to him every day.
