Uncle was a Green Beret "Advisor" in, I think, Laos or Cambodia in the early days. He never talked about it but the multiple packs of cigarettes a day and drinking that helped to take his life at a young age, non-existent before, spoke volumes.

Tet was a tactical win for us but a huge moral victory for the NVA and VC
The only moral loss from it was the fricking hippies got even more pussified. Which in turn left the "leadership" trying to find their nuts. Neither of which, were the ones doing the fighting.

Funny how this exact thing played out again in Iraq.
Nothing in Iraq came even close to the scale that the Vietnam War was. Al Qaeda never launched an attack of any meaning against us. We just allowed the media to manipulate our people.
We haven't had the stomach for total war since WWII.

A mere footnote nowadays, but to so many incredible people, a life altering set of circumstances.
He (my uncle) was a titan before then.

We're 10 & 1!
It was truly chicken shite the way we exited, the crisis of Watergate completely deflated the entire office of the POTUS. The GOP, Ford and what was left of the Administration were not nearly up to the task of stemming the tide to stand behind our commitments to the SV government & people.
Anything related to the fall of South Vietnam is tough (as an American) to watch.
You know it's going to badly end.

Liberal media fricked the country over. Hhhhmmmm sounds about right!!!

quote:If you're making that leap of logic (?) from what I posted, I don't completely agree. Certainly the media had much to do with how the war played on the home front and became a political liability but from a realpolitik standpoint inside the Beltway, there simply wasn't any real desire or impetus to back up our commitments to the Republic of Vietnam.
Liberal media fricked the country over. Hhhhmmmm sounds about right!!!
Not in materiel and certainly not in returning to fight there with US troops.
It wasn't politically expedient partially because the media had made it so toxic but we (the US) simply lied to the people of South Vietnam.
We told them one thing and did another.

If we're saying the media 'beat' our generals and civilian leaders, we have some really big problems.
If talking about leadership failures, a good read is the this: A Failure in Generalship
Also, DOPMA is one of the dumbest things ever done to the military.

Don't ever let someone tell you that the US lost the war in Vietnam. We voluntarily fricked over a lot of people because of shitty leaders
If you think history doesn't repeat itself, read up on how we abandoned the Kurds to Saddam the first time around. They backed us 100% and we fricked them over and let Hussein gas them. That should never been allowed to happen.

This is a subject that makes my blood boil, the notion we "lost" the Vietnam War.
For anyone wanting to know the truth of not only how we won the war, it was actually one of the most lopsided victories in history, but also one of the biggest lies in history, I highly recommend a book titled "Unheralded Victory: The Defeat of the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army, 1961-1973" by Mark Woodruff. You'll come away from the book both amazed at how badly we beat the North Vietnamese and outraged at the scope of the lie from the media we've been spoonfed on this war.

Oh don't even fricking get me started. Schwarzkopf and the US leaders completely sold out Iraq's populace after Desert Storm by agreeing to the terms they agreed to. They should've immediately gone back in after the failed coup and wiped Saddam off the face of the Earth.

Nothing pisses me off quicker than someone saying the United States lost the Vietnam War. It's possibly the only war where a nation's populace felt so bad about winning that they stopped fighting. The casualties that the US inflicted onto the NVA, Vietcong, and the Chinese volunteers was staggering. They lost two generations of men basically.

Tet was like "The Battle of the Bulge". We thought the Germans were defeated and couldn't come close to mounting an offensive. We thought the Germans would be defeated by Christmas. We were shocked by the extent of the offensive. Just like Tet for the NVA the Germans blew there wad. The media was just the opposite, the Germans were considered beaten, where as the media said we couldn't win the Vietnam war. Complete opposites for an action that was just 24 years removed.
The NVA leader General Giap was sure the Viet Cong and the NVA were defeated. They built up supplies, men and material for years prior to Tet. Tet was supposed to be a great victory for the North Vietnamese. Instead they played right into our hands. They came out in the open where we could kill them, instead of hiding and using guerrilla tactics. General Giap was amazed that in the US they were calling Tet a defeat.

There were some true heroes on the ground in those final days. They went above and beyond for as many as they could despite the government abandoning them.

I was a hair too young to get involved. I remember the nightly body count on the news. Things like 200 commies dead vs 10 US and allies. Seems we were trying to win a war of attrition and hoping they would give up. Seems like I remember arguing about who was going to sit at the peace table and even the shape of the table and the pre-negotiations and the negotiations went on for about 2 years.
I came away with this: 1) If you're not willing to do what it takes to win a war then don't get in it. 2) If you can't fight it with volunteers then don't get in it. 3) If Congress doesn't have the guts to declare a war then don't fight one. 4) The use of our technological advantages and a "disproportionate response" is not unfair if it prevents the loss of American life.

Same for me. I remember the nightly Vietnam body count. I was shocked when the news told us we had lost.

fricking this. Just like Iraq. We were absolutely destroying both of them and the media didn't like how good we were at it.

Short YouTube video explains how the war ended
Very disappointing to hear how we didn't hold up our end of the deal because of politicians.
