I would've loved to have seen it in the theaters when it came out...but I wasn't born yet nor a Cosmic baby.
I think people who were in awe and pushed this (boomers) were mostly remembering the shock and awe cinema experience for such a movie to be made at that time...before '69...akin to Gone With The Wind changing the game in 1939.
If you see it for the first time on TV or even a big home screen or even the Cinema now...
Probably not remotely the same thing because something special in 1968 ain't gonna be remotely as new and exciting in 2023. Maybe the time was also different... Movies didn't need to be explained or clear, they just were...and people were okay with that.

I gotta say the "new" video transfer from film looks awesome on the 4K bluray.
Say what you will about the story but it looks and sounds amazing for a film that was made 55 plus years ago.

Think of the hotel suite thing that Bowman ends up in as a womb. His aging is corresponding to the starchild gestating. As human Bowman is deteriorating starchild Bowman is developing until eventually their is no use or purpose for human Bowman.

Well, they used crap actors so the acting is wooden, pretty sterile. There is no emotion in the movie.
Then there is the matter of the monolith when the sun hits it. The movie does a LOUSY job of explaining it sent a signal to the Jupiter monolith. Something is mentioned about it during the mission but seriously, this is a major event, probably most important in human history, and the movie gives it little mention.
The scene where Floyd tells the people on the moon they are stuck there, well, not real. NO one questions anything. For all they know, they might be forced to live the rest of their lives on the moon. Floyd is like oh well. You tell parents they won't see their kids again and they say nothing? Not real.
