My wife’s first comment, “Damn there were a lot of British people in the Ukraine in 1988.”

If you can get past the accents (which I could very easily, as I don't care if they sound authentic), it's one of the best things HBO has ever put out. And that is quite the accomplishment considering their history.

I watched most ( or all, I can't remember ) of the first episode, then had cancelled HBO because of Game of Thrones disaster. I never saw the rest of the series, but heard it really wasn't that good moving forward. Plus some artistic license / over exaggeration kinda got a bit goofy, like the helicopters basically disintegrating in mid air. Yeah, that didn't happen.

Show, there are a few I would rank in front of it. Certainly the best 'miniseries' ever.

"Certainly" is a strong word. Lonesome Dove has a claim to that title. Band of Brothers too.

I only watched episode 1. So far very good. The old man talking to the executive committee about what is in the best interest of the people was chilling.

You're right that didn't happen, it also didn't happen in the show.

Yeah, that's not a good take. Some things were certainly exaggerated and some events changed but holy hell is it a good show. I would probably rank it above Band of Brothers overall.

Best and oddest bromance in a long time. Harris and Skarsgard are fantastic.

That's not what it showed.

A reasonable attempt at a side-by-side comparison -

Yeah, that didn't happen.

They had to use various literary/storytelling devices, composite characters (e.g. the gal scientist), the entire trial at the end was largely a storytelling device, but as far as the literal facts of the accident, its effect on the responders, Soviet society, etc., it was pretty damned good as far as scripted docudramas go. I give it an A+ in entertainment and A in accuracy.

Really thought it was fantastic but like all shows starts losing some steam toward the end.

I thought the last episode where they wrap everything up was the best. Very powerful.

"What is the cost of lies? It's not that we'll mistake them for the the truth. The real danger is that if we hear enough lies, then we no longer recognize the truth at all. What can we do then? What else is left but to abandon even the hope of truth and content ourselves instead with stories?"
