I meant how long did the actual Penguin have to spend working with them, so they could help accomplish his master plan.

I'm sure they were trained in the circus for years. "My babies!"
So creepy. I occasionally have dreams of DeVito's Penguin trying to kill me and I wake up quite upset.

The Penguin-sewer story line was just so bad. Seriously, why do you put him in a sewer? That's the best thing you could come up with to make him an outcast?
What's sad is the Penguin should be an easy villain to do. Just make him a super rich a-hole tycoon.

After TDK, I really thought Nolan would do something like that. Make The Penguin out to be the anti-Wayne....Some billionaire who has been devoting his efforts for decades to ruining Gotham and supporting the mob. "The Penguin" would just be his code name. But I guess it would've been a little anti-climatic to end the trilogy with The Penguin.

Wasn't it true that Robin Williams was going to be the Scarecrow in Batman 5 but Batman and Robin killed that film from being made?

Batman 89 is still my fav of all Superhero movies.
I saw it in the theatre in Jackson MS and they were sitting people on the floor in the isles
Its so much different than all the others though its almost impossible to compare. The whole feel Burton was going for hit the bullseye IMO but Nolans movies obviously works great too.
MP was great in returns but I never was sold on the penguin. Of couse after Nicolsons Joker the bar was set pretty high.

Batman had such great atmosphere in the first one with the look of the city. Returns look was too sleek.

Loved Returns as a kid, I remember Christmas '92 I got the VHS and all kinds of toys based on the movie from Santa that year including this bad boy
So, from a nostalgia standpoint I guess Returns will always hold place near and dear to my heart, but after going back years later and watching both movies the first is the superior film. Like one poster already mentioned, Returns had too much of the Burton treatment done to it. Things like marching penguins with rocket laucners, an aquatic assault vehicle in the shape of a duck, and skeletons riding on motorcycles were entertaining as hell during childhood, but now they just kinda fall in that awesomely bad category.

I personally prefer Batman 89 (probably still my favorite superhero movie) but I like Returns as well. I've always wondered what Burton would've done with Forever had Warner Brothers kept him on as director. I assume Keaton would've come back, and Billy Dee Williams was finally supposed to make his turn as Two-Face. And I always heard Robin Williams wanted to play the Riddler in that movie, but Shumacher ended up going with Jim Carrey.
Would've been an interesting flick to see either way.

Does every Batman film have to have a Robin Williams villian rumor?
Wanted to be the Joker in Batman 89
Wanted to be the Riddler
And then the Scarecrow?
Maybe Batman is just not for you Robin

Returns was too much Tim Burton, I hated his vision of the Penguin. I meeeeaaaannn....trained penguins with shoulder mounted rockets?
I thought it was quite convenient that Batman had a jet powered ski boat on the off chance he might want to go cruising thru the sewers of Gotham.
And I much prefer Batman. I still enjoy it today, and I think it hold up well. Its a good alternate to Nolans take.
Of course, I'm not ashamed to admit I'd stand in line to purchase the Adam West series if they ever released it on DVD. I simply dont understand how you cant enjoy it. SOOO much pop culture influenced by that series.

I watched a DVD last night that had a special about bob Kane on it.
Part of it included the 89 premiere and such. It reminded me how huge and hyped it was when it came out. Lines and lines of people waiting to see it
It was made for 48 million. It brought in 43 million it's first weekend, blowing the record at the time out of the water. Made 250 million in America, 411 million total.
Made 100 million in its first 10 days.
It was THAT big

Batman is better, but Returns is definitely a solid movie

It was crazy how big the hype was for 1989 Batman. I remember going to the theater at the mall and seeing the line go on forever. Its starting to age a bit but its still a great movie and I think if they had continued with that storyline, it could've been a really cool series of movies. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. was all about some Tim Burton at the time.

You know Burton did Batman 89 right?

I think he's implying they gave Burton a massive leash for the 2nd one
