The writing was impeccable (particularly in the first couple of seasons) and the battles, SFX, music were on point for something produced in 2003. The story had a defined arc and while the last season was so-so and there were LOTS of filler episodes in that 80+ hour series everything moved along pretty well.

[spoilers]

I watched Picard maybe 4 months ago and was struck by awful the SFX (in particular spaceships and battles) were by comparison and how terrible the acting was for something produced in 2019. Also in many ways Picard ripped off the basic theme from BSG down to the secret AI planet/colony at the end. BSG is on a whole different level than most of the ST series which seem determined to mimic the 1980s star trek TNG format.

I watched it back in the day and I'm shocked how little I remember. I know I watched the whole thing because bits and pieces were familiar (the piano notes, galactica flexing in that final jump, return of the original cylons) but its amazing how much i forgot.

I'm no BSG homo, in fact I remember not really enjoying it that much the first time around but this is DEFINITELY one to put on your rewatch list if you haven't.

so say we all

Battlestar Galactica was the finest show the Syfy Channel ever produced. It did have its flaws but by and large the acting, writing, production design, and effects were all on point.

Never saw BSG. But Star Trek TNG is great, and has some nostalgia affect on me. It used to come on every night at 9, and my bed time was 10 pm when i was a kid. Me and my brother would watch it and then go to bed.

It comes on now, on BBC sometimes, and i still find myself watching it. It's also a great show to put on when you need a power nap. The soft hum of the Enterprise always relaxes me.

and of course...

Cannot compare the two, they are very different shows. BSG is more like a soap opera with continued story lines. Star Trek has very few multi episode storylines. Two different types of shows. I would say there is not a single episode of BSG that is as good as Darmok, The Inner Light or The Visitor from DS9.

BSG has a Firefly vessel in it, so it's automatically superior.

and...

Measure of a Man: TNG
Best of Both Worlds Part 1&2: TNG
In The Pale Moonlight: DS9
It's only a Paper Moon: DS9 (Nog's PSTD episode)

Adama was a damn military genius. I enjoyed how well written the battles were and the innovative ways he worked around constantly facing superior odds.

Hiding the vipers on the decoy barge; the legendary Adama maneuver and even crashing the Battlestar directly into the hive and rappelling down ropes to gain entry.. Real Man of Genius.

Loved how the show kept the viewers in the dark as to his plans as much as the cylons were so you felt their confusion in real time as they were trying to figure out what the hell he was up to.

Which series? Against Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, and Picard? Sure.

TOS, TNG, and DS9 are still gold tier sci fi television.

Found your problem.

Picard isn't Star Trek.

What do you mean by Star Trek? The original series? All the series combined? The movies what? You mention Picard, that and Discovery are complete garbage imo.

Yes, BSG has a series long story arch. That's a development for TV shows that became more common around 20 years ago. Star Trek (aka TOS) and its various sequels/spinoffs were all before that became the main narrative structure for shows. Star Trek was straight up a one episode on its own show as was TNG basically (minus a few 2 parter "cliff hangers"). DS9 started that way but had more a season long story with the Dominion War in later seasons.

Can we instead talk about how Star Trek Discovery has essentially broken Star Trek canon?

Picard is bad, but at least it is a sequel series, leaving TOS, TNG, and DS9 intact. However, Discovery is trying very hard to ruin TOS.

Or TOS gems like Balance of Terror, Journey to Babel, City on the Edge of Forever, The Devil in the Dark and about 30 or 40 others.
