Was getting it on the roof intentional or did they just like the way that turned out?
It was intentional, and they were all amazed he got it on the first try.

Wow. Really cool to see. Road tripping to Las Vegas, and we figured we would just check it out.
They have a super bright light and security camera attached to the house. Not surprising, tons of people drive by every day

same with Hank and Marie's house, which is owned by a disabled man in a wheel chair.
How you could not have a bell on your wheel chair if you were this guy?

This crossed my mind, but we all know what the frick it looks like, so I applaud the OP for not wasting moments of my life looking at needless photos.

So finding the places to film is part of my job description, and what they do is have an idea of what they want, you photograph as many houses similar to what they describe and (these days) email them to the director and production designer, who probably haven't left LA yet. They tell you which ones they like or by that point decide they want something totally different (these guys change their minds a hundred times a day), eventually come down and tech scout all the options, then based on price, convenience for parking trucks, city government restrictions, neighbors willingness to not bitch about you being there for so long, etc., a decision is finally made. It's a very realistic possibility that this house was chosen cause the guy offered them a great deal. If he is as nice as described, he may have let them take advantage, cause sadly, we prey on the ignorant and friendly for cheap locations.

If that's a real house, I wonder how many pizzas the owners have found on the roof? How many on the ground representing failed attempts? It's what I would want to do were I to make the pilgrimage
I read a story once where some overzealous fan brought a pizza to the house to try to recreate the scene, and the owner actually came out the house and said - don't even think about it.

Houses like that become legend though. Nightmare on elm street house, hell even the home alone house.

Our church goes to NM every summer on a mission trip. I stopped by there last time I went. Our hotel was just a mile from the high school. We also work on the small reservation )Tohajilee) were the first cook and big gunfight took place. Going to see if I can find those spots next time.

Not surprised. There was bound to be a knucklehead out there who would actually try it.

A sibling of a friend of mine bought a house in Mid-City New Orleans where they filmed home office scenes of the female attorney in "Treme." They just filmed in the one room. So the new owners had to just leave that one office/study as it was for the duration of the filming. I don't know how much they were compensated, but I was told that their mortgage was basically paid for for about a year.
