This is about the movie, not the book.

Can we take a minute to appreciate what John Hammond actually pulled off? The park was amazing and the trial tour would have likely gone off without a hitch if he hadn’t hired Dennis Nedry.

Which brings me to my point. With all of the comments about how they “spared no expense,” the conversation between Hammond and Nedry about Nedry’s financial issues appear to show that Hammond chose Nedry as the lowest bidder for IT work. Seems like some expenses were spared a bit for IT, one of the most important aspects of the park and its functionality.

Had he taken the time to properly vet his bidders maybe he would’ve seen that there were more trustworthy people than Nedry. Or maybe there was someone more qualified who put in a higher bid, so if money was no object (as he alluded to 37 times) then going high quality on IT should’ve been a priority. With Nedry, maybe he interviewed well or gave good impressions up front, but it seems like you could sort of smell him from a mile away with how grimy and shady he was. Seems like cutting corners on any of the most essential personnel members is dumb (essential being mainly Nedry - IT, Muldoon - game warden; Arnold - chief engineer).

I’d also argue that if the tropical storm doesn’t happen, things likely don’t go sideways either. But that’s more beyond his control and he had likely planned to bring everyone there for this trial phase for weeks/months.

But the Nedry hire seems almost inexcusable. He’s a sleezy dude and it’s pretty easy to tell. No matter how good he is at IT it’s worth not opening yourself up to his bullshite. And had he taken the time to properly vet his potential hires, it would’ve likely gone off with very few issues and he’d have been rolling in millions/billions in no time.

Thoughts?

Good point.

I'm guessing Hammond had the same opinion as a lot of CEOs when it comes to IT. They aren't important ....until they are.

honestly people joke “why would they try the park again when it was such a disaster!”

Uh they brought dinosaurs back to fricking life it literally only failed because someone shut off the security

it’s single handedly a top 5 achievement in science.

I think in the novel Hammond didn’t really give Nedry the correct spec’s for what he needed done. This was all because of the secrecy of the park’s plans. He then made a system after which Hammond came back and said it was completely inadequate. They then argued about money, etc. It didn’t help Dodgson came to Nedry (a newly disgruntled employee with a massive sum of $$$)

The biggest mistake in my opinion was having only like 2 people who understood anything about computers other than Nedry. Even Wu knew minimal at best .

Couldn't have been too complex. His granddaughter had it figured out.

Nah it seemed properly set up. It was Nedry that fricked up the fence systems so he could escape to the boat.

He also could’ve shelled out for a storm shelter and on site accommodations so the Park wasn’t left with literally 4 employees for the weekend

I’m talking about the movie only.

But if Nedry doesn’t execute his plan the worst that happens most likely is a few dinosaur no shows and them getting out of the jeeps to go see the sick triceratops.

Also, I always wondered how the keeps turned around to head back up the tour to the T-Rex paddock.

And as much as I want to buy the explanations of how it is feasible that the T-rex could walk through the fence and later there’s about a 75 foot drop, I think it really is just a mistake by Spielberg. Because watching it lately a lot with my son, it doesn’t make any sense at all (and yes I’ve seen the drawing that tries to explain it away).

He had to hire him. You know anybody who can network 8 connection machines and debug 2 million lines of code for what he bid for that job? Because if he can I'd like to see him try.

That quote is exactly my point. He went with the low bidder instead of “sparing no expense” and hiring someone better qualified.

I'm sorry about your financial problems Dennis, but they are your problems.

a park like that has man eating dinosaurs and only a fence holding back, ya better have the best of the best working IT. I'm talking like a genius from Harvard, and not a fat sleaze ball lol

That’s contracting 101 and how most companies/consultants win the award

The raptor enclosure seemed pretty small for one raptor, let alone more than one.

Yea, I’m aware. But this isn’t most companies. It’s the single greatest scientific achievement maybe in history. And all he talks about is how he spared no expense. And he shouldn’t have. That’s literally the point of the thread, that he SHOULDN’T have done it like normal, especially with how much he’s touting that money is no object.

I’m not sure why some of you are missing the point completely.

That’s just how they feed them, no? They have their own paddock I’m pretty sure. At one point Muldoon asks if the raptor fences are still working and they check. He wouldn’t ask that for that tiny little enclosure where they feed.

So like most CEOs Hammond was also full of hot air about the actual building of the park
