This is a spin-off from a previous thread. I had planned on posting it in there but decided I spent too much time on it to let it disappear on page eight or nine of a never ending debate. So here we go:

The big reason why people like to think Bond is a moniker and not a real person is due to George Lazenby's line, "This never happened to the other fellow" in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. But from that point on (both in the movie and in the franchise) he acts like the same man from Dr. No.

- He has the same catchphrase ("Bond, James Bond")
- He likes the same drink (vodka martini) and likes it made the same way (shaken and not stirred)
- Has the same favorite car (Aston-Martin DB5)
- Is always a serial womanizer, sexist and misogynistic
- Is in love with the same gun (Walther PPK 7.65mm)
- Is an orphan and was orphaned at a young age

And those are just his personality traits. You also have additional evidence in the films that shows it's the same guy. The biggest piece of evidence? His wife.

James Bond was married in On Her Majesty's Secret Service to a woman named Teresa (though she went by Tracy). She is assassinated at the end of the film by Blofeld and Irma Bunt.

In the very next film, Diamonds Are Forever, Bond (once against played by Sean Connery) is brutally assaulting Blofeld's known associates in a desperate attempt to find Blofeld and get revenge on him.

In The Spy Who Loved Me (Roger Moore's third Bond film) Barbara Bach's Anya Amasova recites Bond's dossier to him and brings up his wife saying, "Many lady friends, but married only once. Wife killed and..." to which Bond cuts her off.

In For Your Eyes Only (another Roger Moore film), Bond visits the grave of his wife. On her tombstone it is written: "Teresa Bond - 1943-1969 - Beloved Wife of James Bond - We Have All the Time in the World." This proves definitively that the Roger Moore Bond is the same as the George Lazenby Bond. Teresa died in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (which was released in 1969) and the final line Bond speaks in the movie is, "We have all the time in the world."

Flash forward to 1989's License to Kill and Timothy Dalton is standing outside Felix Leiter's house, talking to Leiter and Leiter's new wife Della. Della tries to give Bond her garter, signifying that he would be the next one to be married. Bond refuses the offer, says good night, and abruptly leaves. Della asks Felix if she said something wrong. Felix replies, "He was married once, but that was a long time ago." This confirms that George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton all portray the same James Bond.

While Brosnan's Bond never outright spells out his previous marriage, there are anecdotal hints towards it. In Tomorrow Never Dies, Teri Hatcher's Paris Carver questions Bond's motives for walking out on her years before: "Did I get too close for comfort?" To which Bond replies, "Yes."

In The World is Not Enough, Elektra King and Bond are discussing the recent death of King's father. Elektra asks Bond, "Have you ever lost a loved one, Mr. Bond?" James shifts uncomfortably before quickly changing the subject.

And if the evidence for Connery being the same Bond as Lazenby is a little shaky, take the scene in On Her Majesty's Secret Service where Bond has just submitted his resignation to M and is cleaning out his desk. Inside his desk are trophies from the previous films: Honey Ryder's knife (Dr. No), Grant's garrote watch (From Russia With Love), and Bond's breathing apparatus (Thunderball). Not only does he possess them, he clearly has a fondest for them as he pauses over each one of them and has a look on his face as if he's remembering the times in his life that they were used.

The Connery Bond is definitely connected to the Moore Bond due to their connection with the character of Quarrel. Quarrel worked closely with Bond in Dr. No and was killed at the end of the film's second act. His son, Quarrel Jr., makes an appearance in Live and Let Die and is seen to be very buddy buddy with Bond.

The characters of Q, Moneypenny, and Felix Leiter connect all the Bonds together. All of them have very close, personal relationships with Bond which seem to go back years. Moneypenny is flirtatious with Bond in every single film, Q is always frustrated with him, and Leiter is always amused by his unorthodox antics. How does a revolving door of 007s (if it was a code name) maintain similar relationships with the same people?

- Both the Sean Connery James Bond and Roger Moore James Bond are graduates of Cambridge.

- George Lazenby's James Bond and Pierce Brosnan's James Bond share the name family motto: The World is Not Enough.

- Sean Connery's James Bond and Pierce Brosnan's James Bond are connected through the jetpack in Thunderball. Upon seeing it in the basement, Pierce Brosnan asks Q if it still works, speaking as if he was familiar with it.

There are many other anecdotal easter eggs found in the Bond films that point to Bond being a real person and not a code name. However, I think I've covered enough of them.

You seem to have a lot of time in your hands. If this is all about Idris Elba playing Bond I will retort that I don't care. If I can accept how ever many different white actors playing Bond I can accept Elba also.

There are two reasons for casting black actors in these franchise leads:

1. PC

2. Black audiences "open" a movie, and a movie's opening weekend is life and death nowadays -- the % of the box office the studio gets goes down after the first two weeks.

While some of these black castings are no big deal, James Bond can't be black, because the old school tie, gentrified world Bond comes from does not include blacks. He can't be black any more than he can be American*. It makes as much sense as casting Jackie Chan as Bond.

*Which was actually considered by the Bond producers in the '70s, but that's another story...

3. They have the opportunity to cast an amazing british star in the role, who happens to be black

Oh, for frick’s sake... just get over it. I was opposed to the idea originally, but it’s not like Chris Rock is going to be the next James Bond. It’s Idris Elba. He’s a complete badass and an awesome actor. He’s going to be a great James Bond... if they write good material.

What they really need to do is spend a crazy amount of time on the source material and make a Bond Film that feels like a fricken Bond Film. Go back to Dr. No and Goldfinger. Make something in that vein, and I’ll be much happier, regardless of who is playing the character. Daniel Craig is a great actor, but brooding a-hole Bond needs to go away.

Don't kid yourself. If blacks didn't open, this would not even be considered

I presume a fig Bond would be OK? After all, he may have been Scottish in the books but they were written in the cold war

it's time for a non-cis-hetero Bond

Let's hear your arguments against Jane Bond, or even a gender-fluid Jamie Bond, if you have any, you hetero-normist piece of shite

I think Elba would do a great job. He has the demeanor to pull it off.

shite if he can play an Asgardian then why not a British spy. There are some characters that require a certain ethnicity but I don’t think Bond does.

This is really good stuff, pretty compelling evidence. I prefer the other theory, however.

In that vein, most/all of the personality traits of "James Bond" can be passed on to a highly trained spy with several months of training. After that, it would be second nature for the new Bond to maintain continuity.

Gender fluids are gross to me.

No issue with a Jane Bond, but I wouldn't watch. Can't suspend disbelief long enough to see women bating up grown men.

So there

In Live and Let Die, Bond's drink is bourbon on ice.

They did this to separate his character from Connery's character.

His drink in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker is a vodka martini.

They did this because his character is the same as Connery's character.

I have documentary evidence as to their motives, not conjecture like you do.
