Tomorrow will mark 33 years since Carson left the Tonight Show and I still submit that the country hasn’t been the same since. He’s been off the air now longer than he was on. Once it became Jay vs Dave, everyone stopped having a shared experience to end each day.
It’s wild though. Look back at old Conan or Letterman Late Night reruns and they are still legitimately really funny. Then switch over to Seth Meyers trying to be serious and it’s objectively sad. Chasing “clapter” is the only thing Late night comedy hosts care about now.

How boring must those writing rooms be?
“Alright everyone, we got to get ready for Colbert’s monologue for Tuesday’s show. Let’s hear your best Trump jokes….again.”

I remember watching Letterman's last late night and first late show. There was still the lawsuit controversy over him doing the top ten on CBS and he said frick it, full send.
Conan had these bits where a TV with a face would come down and the mouth would be fake like he was interviewing the person. Those Saddam Hussein and Janet Reno episodes had me thinking I was gonna die from laughing so hard. Not to mention the insult comic dog. Comedy gold.

Late night TV is completely dead. They have very little audience left and what audience they do have definitely wants the anti-Trump stuff. At this point that's what the shows inherently are. I get the feeling when Trump is gone most of these shows will quickly follow. I think the Tonight Show will ultimately be the last one standing just on brand.

Yeah, and those segments sound stupid as hell when you describe them…but they were funny as hell because the show didn’t take itself seriously. Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel take themselves seriously.

This reminds me of one of my favorite Far Side panels.

You could see it on Conan and Andy's faces like "WTH are we doing" but just rolling with it. The one where they gave bill clinton a viagra and he almost had a heart attack. The only way to kill his boner was janet reno showing up. Classic

And that's a shame because his dry delivery translated well for sports news and he and Dan Patrick and The Big Show were must see 10PM Sportscenter. Basically enforcing the adage, just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you need to share it.

Not sure who the audience is for these shows nowadays other than some percentage of the far left population.
Carson got it. These guys today
are just there to root for their tribe.

late night shows are therapy for shitlibs

Fallon started off The Tonight Show staying away from the toxic OMB stuff and his ratings were in the garbage, so I can only assume that they brought in a bunch of hairy-legged bitches with purple hair and metal shite in their faces to weave their TDS webs and Nielsen says they were rewarded for their efforts.
I don't believe that resonated with actual audiences, but that's just me.

Meyers, Kimmel, Colbert, and that fat british cigarette guy ruined late night comedy shows forever, mostly with their TDS.
You can add that antler-mouthed fig Oliver to that list as well.
