Why would anyone be surprised the target audience for these novels reads them?

Gee, you sure told me, although I'm pretty sure I'm not a moron. Maybe it's just how I perceive the maturity level of that stuff. I can't stand the thought of having to even read a chapter of any of that crap or any of those fantasy trilogies, series, etc., that seem to be so popular these days. I also hated things like the The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings junk when I was a kid.
I'd rather read Raymond Chandler, Cormac McCarthy, Margaret Atwood, Hilary Mantel (if you want 16th Century settings), Madison Smart Bell, Ian McEwan, Annie Proulx, etc.
So there!

If you think that describes who reads those authors, the moron has come home to roost. Plus you're lending credence to my "young adult" comment.

Lol that you're acting like ASOIAF is akin to Twilight.

I feel bad for him. A lot of people seem to hate him because he betrayed the Starks, but I think it's a bit more complicated than that. He was a hostage of the Starks. He was just trying to make a place for himself among his own people, but it was too late for that. He wasn't strong enough, and the Iron Islands were no longer his home.
Then he gets horribly tortured and has his dick cut off. shite just wasn't cool.

The show has done such a shite job on the character's arc, it doesn't surprise me that some on here have no sympathy for him.
His arc and Jamie's are by far the best character arcs in the books. Tyrion's is good as well, but I think his is just beginning so to speak with the last book.

Thank you for the spoiler, good sir. Couldn't miss it in the title.

Theon's story is a sad one.
At the core of his actions, he just wanted a place where he could belong. He seemed to identify more with the Starks than the Greyjoys. He was always an outcast with the wolves because he was really just a captive. Then he goes back home to be rejected as well.
RED WEDDING SPOILER TIME:
He'd have been better off dying at Robb's side at the Twins.

People are so crazy about their spoilers. There isn't one. Especially if you are caught up on the show.
"Something bad happens to Theon."
That's all that he said. I can't understand how that ruins anything. It could mean anything. There wouldn't be a story if something bad didn't happen, and in this type of story something bad happens to everyone.

Well there are some limits to a tv show, even HBO ...

Comparison
of Book
and Show
One really horrific thing that is made clear in the books is that he looses his fingers, toes, etc. by having them skinned and then having to beg to have them cut off when the pain from the skinning is too excruciating to bear. I'm not sure that part comes across clearly in the show. Hell, the show really can't depict the actual act of skinning which would probably be too much for even HBO.
Also, the book makes good use of inner monologues and putting readers inside the head of characters. I think that is also something that is hard to depict on a show.

He murdered 2 kids, why should we feel bad for him?

I'll also say I think the books have done a better job building up the sympathy angle then the show has at this point.
I do like the show's addition of having him write a letter to Robb warning him of his father's invasion, but then burning it before sending it out. He didn't have a second's thought about betraying Robb in the book until it was too late. Really think he should have done the same thing in the book.

Total sidetrack. But is my answer to the OP.
NYPD Blue. Andy Scipowicz. Alcoholic. Recovers. Partner 1 fired unjustly. Partner 2 dies of a bacterial heart infection. Before that his son is murdered. New wife and mother of new baby is gut shot and dies in his arms. Partner 3 goes crazy and is murdered by mobsters. When the story line went to his baby possibly having a form of leukemia I near gave up on the show.
Character and story aren't midevel but he is my submission to OP question.
