One thing the show did a poor job of explaining was why Robert married Cersi. After Robert's War, the realm was on the verge of splitting up and the country's debts were tremendous. If the realm split, then Kings Landing would have never been able to pay off its debts. Robert and Cersi's marriage did two things: it aligned political powerful families which prevented the realm from splitting and Lannister's wealth was used to rebuild and begin paying down the debt.

Yes, but villains like Caligula are to be admired somewhat. As despicable as many villains are, you've got to respect them for some of the shite they've done. Joffrey can't be, which I think makes him all the more despicable.

It doesn't take much to prevent Joffrey. All Cersei has to do is as a word differently during sex or make Jamie do one more thrust. It's all about which sperm reaches first. Think about how close you personally weren't coming to existence.

I watched the latest episode yesterday morning. Afterwards I was thinking about Jack Gleeson (the actor that plays the role) and how bad I felt for him. He is doing an outstanding job playing the part, but at the same time I will hate him forever because of this character.

Have you read the books ? I thought the books made it pretty clear that Cersei and Jaime only loved each other and were all about making babies of pure Lannister blood.

This thread just keeps going in circles. What some including yours truly are suggesting is that Joffrey did not become a sadistic psychopath because Robert was a shitty father. There is most definitely a genetic glitch in that at least in part explains Joffrey's fricked up character.

Joffrey is a dick because of incest AND his mother is a count and his father is always drunk off his arse.

I think Joffrey was fricked from the start, but I think they could have easily stopped his conception in the first place if Robert treated his wife with an ounce of respect. Sure she may have had some other Jamie spawns, but probably not Joffrey. If he treated her with dignity, she would also probably willingly have Robert's own child, but he didn't so she aborted the kid. Despite Cersei being an evil count, I think he is partially to blame for Cersei wanting that abortion in the first place.
