Return of the King is the final act of a three-part story. Not exactly the same thing.

I personally think one could enjoy the story of Empire without ever having seen New Hope.

Absolutely. The Godfather Part II is the perfect example of a sequel standing on its own without the aid of the original.

Yes and IW was the culmination of a much more ambitious project.

Not liking IW because it doesn’t stand on its own is like not liking Breaking Bad or the Sopranos because I only watched the the second to last episode

I can't think of another franchise that basically had 18 movies with solid and entertaining being the floor for all of them. There really isn't one in the group that's flat out terrible. The majority of them are in fact very good and well done. To have the 19th movie in a series be the best one (or top 2 for the CAWS fans) is incredible. And the overall trajectory of the franchise has definitely been upward. Maybe James Bond? But then again that's a series that's been rebooted a few times and isn't one continuous arc of story. What Marvel has been pulling off with the MCU is incredible. Even if the individual movies themselves aren't Best Picture worthy type films.

it just might be a legitimate criticism.

No, it's not. It is the culmination of a universe set up over a decade. No fricking shite it relies on information from the previous decade of world-building. Citing that as some flaw is lazy at best.

Ambitious and flawed.

No. It's not like that at all. There is no comparison between a serialized TV show and a two hour film.

So what? I'm still trying to understand why this is supposed to mean something. The James Bond universe has been around for much longer, as has the X-Men universe. You don't see people jerking it to the longevity of those two franchises.

bullshite.

This is exactly like that. The MCU is a series of films all related to each other telling different aspects of an overarching story.

It is more like a TV series than you think.

It's okay to dislike whatever. If you go around telling people you dislike something, someone is likely to come around and tell you why it is actually awesome.

Though, I suppose it is braver than starting a thread about how much you hate The Last Jedi.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. It's okay. I deal with LCDs like yourself all the time when discussing these films. I will not trouble you anymore.

On this board that is most certainly true. I am on record saying I like the majority of the movies, but say they are flawed films and you immediately get attacked for it. Because I had the gall to say I liked Man of Steel and the director's cut of Batman v. Superman, I have been labeled a Marvel hater and a DC apologist.

I'm with you there. If you just say the mcu is average, you're quickly labeled a DC fanboy

I wasn't a fan of either - mostly because they reinvented Superman in a way to where the description they give him later in Justice League doesn't make sense.

There's nothing wrong with liking them though. Affleck's Batman in the second movie is really good, though I felt he was too... "murdery". My primary complaints about those movies is that they're not really true to the characters, which isn't much of a problem until you try and treat them like the classic versions of them in future movies.

Its a free country. I liked the movie enough to see it in theaters as well as renting it when it came out on dvd.

You don’t really make a name for yourself going along with popular opinion

I'll give you Man of Steel. It was definitely an entertaining re-imagining of Superman. But every version of BvS is fricking unrestrained shite. I'm talking splatter the bottom side the toilet seat diarrheatic colon evacuation. frick that movie.

It's great but slow your roll with this nonsense. TDK is a top 10 all time movie.

Ugh. As most have pointed out, what a terrible, whiny piece of writing. OF COURSE you can not like something. Not like away. But acting like you've committed some grave sin and you will be ostracized... oh poor baby.

Instead of asking the obvious question of IF you're allowed to dislike something, just write the article critical of the movie. Point out the flaws. Say what you didn't like. Have some f'ing backbone, you cowardly git. I couldn't even finish reading it through all of the smarm.

(To contrast, check out this criticism of NANETTE, the wildly praised Netflix comedy special, calling it "comfortable woke" by attacking it not from the right, as is expected, but from the left... calling it tame, erasing of the Jewish comedy legacy, and designed to shame gays into being more appropriate: LINK

This guy is grasping at straws just to be different and controversial. It’s why I can’t take critics at their word all the time. It’s fine to not like something but for reasons and arguments that make sense, not to be intentially obtuse.

What the MCU has accomplished is nothing short of incredible. Infinity War is one of the most ambitious projects ever and had every reason that it wasn’t going to work or be balanced... but the Russos and Marvel fricking nailed it and lived up to their promises. One of the best comic movies of all time and a landmark villain that will be remembered for decades. The “snappening” is already a part of the cultural lexicon. What will be even crazier is if they do it again with A4

He's basically the comic book version of Dr. Paul Ehrlich. I liked Thanos and thought he was the best part of the film, but come on! The above is insane hyperbole.

I loved Infinity War and thought it was incredible after a rewatch this week, but I still hold the Dark Knight above it. They did a wonderful job with Thanos but he's not near the villain that the Joker is in the Dark Knight.
