The Fat Electrician did an episode on the history of Air Conditioning and he says that you can make the argument that Air Conditioning is responsible for the rise of the movie industry and Hollywood because movie theaters were one of the first industries to adopt the air conditioner. People didn't go to the movies because they wanted to watch the films, they went because they could sit in the air conditioning for 2 hours and get out of the heat (which could be a correlation to the Summer blockbuster season, as that's the time of year that hollywood would sell the most tickets, and Hollywood is an industry resistant to change).

I also wondered this when I went to Spain and saw all the poors lined up to visit The Prada museum in the line for free admission. Once I got inside, all the benches were taken. The people actually viewing the art pieces were dressed much nicer as if they were in the paid admission line.

A year later I’m hearing my cousin (a huge fan of “the arts” lamenting with my sister in law that the US government just doesn’t support the arts like the rest of the world.

It was tempting to share my observation and my hypothesis about AC. But it would have become a political debate and I try not to go there with family.
