Is Citizen Kane the most overrated movie in history ?

I get the feeling that it is considered the greatest movie in history for no other reason than everyone says so.
Kind of like everyone says Jimmy Hendrix is the greatest guitar player, just because everyone says so.
I've tried to suffer through that movie a few times, but I just don't get the hype.

I think it has more to do with how it changed the film industry vs. the actual story.

Hell no. Now I don’t think it is the greatest movie in history but it is a very good movie.

Considering it invented modern storytelling, cinematography, and film editing as we know it? No. We take a lot of what Citizen Kane did for film for granted nowadays because just about every filmmaker uses those techniques Citizen Kane first pioneered.

Not from a technical standpoint. Now, no individual element was particularly revolutionary, but the creative use of virtually all the techniques available with the cameras they had at the time was revolutionary. Film was still relatively young, as an art form and CK advanced that art by a full decade or so.
Now, as a total film (acting, directing, writing, lighting, sound, etc.), it is still outstanding, but probably a little overrated in that regard.
I mean, it came out the same year as How Green Was My Valley, which is itself one of the greatest films by one of the early era's greatest directors.
Just two years later saw Casablanca. CK is probably more revered by filmmakers, particularly those who came of age in the 60s and 70s than casual film fans. I say this as a fan of the film and someone who does think it deserves consideration as best film of all time.

Yep. Before 1941 no one knew how to tell a story.

It's hard to judge from a modern standpoint because many of it's conventions and themes were adopted by later films. You can't really appreciate how it "changed" films if you didn't get to see the before and after I guess.

1941 was a helluva year for movies. From wiki:
quote:
It [How Green Was My Valley] was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning five, famously beating Citizen Kane, Sergeant York and The Maltese Falcon for Best Picture, while Ford won for Best Director, Donald Crisp for Best Supporting Actor, Arthur Miller for Best Cinematography, and Richard Day, Nathan H. Juran and Thomas Little for Best Black-and-White Art Direction-Interior Decoration.

Yeah, because that’s exactly what I meant. It was the structure of the story that was unique and pioneering.

Same thing with people saying the Beatles are overrated. You can not like the Beatles, that’s fine. But their affect on pretty much everything (but especially the music industry) is undeniable and they changed the game forever. But at this point things that are considered “normal” are that way because of them. So saying they’re overrated it just shortsighted bullshite.
People who say that kinda stuff about CK are in that same category for me.

You had one bad take and it wasn’t enough so you added an even worse take on top of it
