1st: CNET Link

2nd: RottenTomatoes Link

Quote from 1st Link: ..."Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said the company hopes to air the show sometime in 2021."

other tidbit... 1st season may have 20 episodes...

Also.. Amazon had to commit to 5 seasons at a minimum before the Tolkien estate give them the rights...

To people who think this is a good thing:

More episodes =/= more quality. 10 episodes a season max. Anymore and they will be chocked full of useless filler.

I’m optimistic I’ll still be getting off to Middle Earth filler.

Unless Amazon's budget per season is in the 1 billion range, no way will they pull off episodes that look the quality of the films or even GOT. It'll look cheap with obvious CGI. Sad because Return of the King's 16 year old CGI still mostly holds up today.

Yeah, gonna have to disagree with you there.

Unlike Game Of Thrones, we know where this one is going. Anyone who has read Tolkien, and even those who have only seen the movies but grasp the timeframe, will not be shocked or surprised by any endings. We know what this ultimately leads to.
That "useless filler" could be considered character and story development, something GoT lacked in a BIG way towards the end.

Amazon drops the entire season immediately, so in theory you can binge in a day (definitely a weekend). That's all fine, but then you got to wait a full year for more.
... unless you follow the Vikings model, then you only have to wait half a year: they show 1-10 starting in Feb, and 11-20 in November.

umm the final season of GOT (Which had massive actor salaries by this time) was 15 million a season. So if they completely maxed it out (which they dont have to as they don't need massive armies, dragons, and ice) at 15 mil an episode 15*20 episodes = 300 million.

They paid 250 mil for the rights.. I dont think they are halfassing this one.

Well, Amazon's budget IS pretty damn high.

And, are you familiar with the subject matter (Tolkien's Second Age)? Most of the budget will be location, sets and wardrobe- stuff you can reuse. There aren't a ton of battles. There aren't a ton of creatures.

Sauron at this point will be Annatar, who will look like a male supermodel, and the Nazgul will be various kings of Khand and Harad, etc... all men, in other words.

Middle Earth filler is better than cutting out Tom F'n Bombadil.

At this point on society, I expect Amazon to make half the male characters female or invent "heroic females" and make half the cast look like they were born in Senegal.

Even 5 years ago, I would trust them to do it right, but not anymore. This is the sacred cow here of fantasy literature they are dealing with.

It should be treated with extreme reverence and be done right. My only hope is that the Tolkien estate told them they couldn't frick with the mythology and the characters and pc crap to it just for shits and giggles.

I have no idea where the shoe will begin or what age it will cover. I'm still hoping for a deep dive into the Silmarillion, but there may just be things that can't be filmed, no matter what the budget.

Anything with Sauron though would still be a major win. Especially with him disguised in his human form.

My understanding is that the Estate cut Jackson out for this very reason, despite the fact that he was making money hand over fist. The Hobbit was a betrayal to them, and I think that's been publicly stated.

One hopes that Amazon would honor that intent, but $250 million is a lot of money. If I invested that much just for rights, I'd want a little freedom to do what I want.

Nice, I believe I read somewhere that the show runners will be able to portray the Simallrions as it was intended in Tolkien works. I saw an interview where the producer said that Tolkien was a big advocate of LGBT and have try to include that into his book subtly but defining it as something else in the book.

However, Sauron will have a lot of gay sex with elves because the book states that he "seduced" men and elves, and many other people with his good looks. The producers even went to point that it was the actual wording Tolkien used.

So...ready yourselves fellas!

Seems like everything coming out of Hollywod sure as hell does. And yes it is exhausting, I agree.

ummm... Tolkien and his wife were both religious people from (if I recall correctly..) a liturgical background. Also, CS Lewis has credited his friendship with Tolkien as one of the influences in his conversion to the Christian faith. Nothing in any of JRR Tolkien's history, background, biography and writings would support this.

Revisionism in play here if what you say is true...

I’d be good with that. I’d rather 10 episodes, wait six months, then another 10 episodes. As opposed to 20 episodes all at once, then wait over a year for the next season.

Yeah, Tolkien was a devout Catholic. His writings have plenty of parallels to stories in the bible.
