In honor of 10/31, I watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Last night. Still the GOAT

I have only seen this movie probably 3 times now. It left such an imprint on me after the first viewing, I didn't really need to watch it again to remember. Watching it last night really took me back to late-middle school when I finally watched this thing. Holy shite it was such an experience (I also had the good fortune to time watching perfectly starting at dusk). I had been watching horror movies for a long time (mostly edited ones on USA Up All night) and I was used to the typical 80s slasher.

This movie...it showed what a real horror movie could be. Because it was shot on 16mm without professional lighting, it looks like a snuff film (sort of a proto-found footage). There weren't cues like in slasher movies (like the heh heh heh hoh hoh hoh in Jason movies) and it was just...real.

Then you get to the end and it's utter insanity and a level the slashers could never touch. It was just such a different experience it's hard to really describe how foundational that first viewing was. It showed me, a movie lover, just how much I was missing in the movies I was watching, generally. TCM was released about 20 years prior to my viewing, and I had no idea movies could do this.

It's truly a shame how they turned this amazing film into generic slashers by film 3 (and the entire reboot franchise).

It's the movie Rob Zombie keeps trying to make.

Damn I feel that.

Kept thinking about how shitty House of 1000 Corpses is while watching TCM last night.

It's not even the complete ripoff factor, it's how he would do the quick cuts to nonsense. Just C-level moviemaking, but also trying to ripoff how brilliantly Tobe Hooper used cuts away from the action to make things more unsettling.

While Hooper would cut to like, a cow, Rob Zombie has to cut to a 5-second clip of the bad guys being bad..somewhere else. Just a complete lack of creativity mixed with an incredible amount of try hard.

I did like HO1C and The Devil's Rejects, but yeah it's no comparison with TCM. Not even the same universe as far as quality.

Yea its fantastic.

I like how a lot of it happens during the daytime, makes it extra creepy.

The movie also doesn't really have a score or background music which makes it terrifying. Has a found footage feel to it.

For instance, when Kirk gets killed there is no music or anything, it just happens.

Yeah if you know nothing of the movie, it's incredibly shocking.

Stumble. Squeal. Hammer. Move body. Slam steel door.

Then you're just left looking at a closed door in the dark wondering "what is behind that door?"

No cues (music or otherwise) leading you to create suspense. Just un-gory shock in a realistic way.

I feel the same way to a slightly lesser degree. Although I didn't see it for the 1st time until I was in my early 20's. I watched TCM, Psycho, and Halloween all around the same time and I was like "yep, it's not really going to get any better than this." And nothing really ever has.

I don't do the gore and demon possessed stuff so I haven't watched this genre nearly as much as pretty much any other genre. But there's just something about about some people stumbling upon some crazy persons house out in rural Texas that is creepier to me than an Exorcist type scare.

It's mind-blowing how many disturbing horror films have been inspired by one man.

Yeah I agree fully. I will admit that I've always been scared of rural areas, so it plays into that bias well.

Kind of why I've found that I really like folk horror, too.

I never found Exorcist scary, but I've grown on demonic movies if done well. Like the Wailing. A masterpiece. Hereditary is good, too. But they're not scary or as impactful to me as the thought of running into some weirdos in an extremely rural area who have no fear of being caught due to the isolation.

It's even more mind-blowing when you realize this should have been a PG movie and then he went on to direct* an actually scary PG horror movie.

That's one reason I thought the first Wrong Turn movie was so good. Don't get me wrong, it's silly and fun in places, and I'm not trying to say it's an all time great. But the idea that a fricked up family living in the mountains gets away with so much shite simply because they are so isolated is pretty creepy.

I watched the original TCM about ten or so years ago. And while I liked it, it wasn't as awesome to me as it is to most others. But I could definitely see why it was so shocking in its time.

I also really loved the remake with Jessica Biel. I thought that was really good (I know there are mixed opinions on that one though).

As for House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects, I thought both of those were pretty meh. I'll never understand why those RZ films are held in such high regard in some circles. It's not that they were terribly films (or terribly made). It's more that they just weren't very good or particularly interesting to me.

You need to watch "Blood On Satan's Claw".

It's an old HammerHorror Movie that might seem tame, but it is pretty atmospheric and fun for a low-budget, older movie.

That's not a bad way to put it.

Although I liked Wrong Turn infinitely better than the Rob Zombie movies. Not even close.

No problem with that.

I totally get why people don't like Rob Zombie movies.

I'm a fan of his, but not blinded to the fact that he's made some bad movies.
