Watched this last night on a whim after finishing Jessica Jones. Hadn't seen it in a few years and decided to watch it as a refresher

I had always considered it a 5/5, but upon rewatching it, I may give it a seat at the 6 Star table—a hallowed space that houses the likes of Pan's Labyrinth, Spirited Away, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Pulp Fiction, and No Country For Old Men, among others. I only break my 5 star rule for the rare movies for which I can't think of a single thing I'd change. I believe that In Bruges falls into this category.

The script is brilliantly written. Not a single second of wasted conversation. Everything hilariously comes back into the fold, be it the Canadians getting Ray thrown off the train, the fatass Americans getting the tower shut down, the one-eyed thief getting chastised by Harry, etc. The characters are great and it's downright hilarious. Perfect execution of dark comedy. Martin McDonagh is famous for his stage plays, and this movie watches just like one.

quote:

"An Uzi? I'm not from South Central Los fricking Angeles. I didn't come here to shoot twenty black ten year olds in a drive-by. I want a normal gun for a normal person."

quote:

"I had Pizza Hut."
"Was it nice?"
"Yeah, I mean...it's Pizza Hut. Same as in England."
"Yeah, that's globalization isn't it?"

The acting is amazing all around. Colin Farrell gives the best performance of his life, Gleeson plays the perfect mentor figure, Harry is the ideal hysterical mob boss. Every supporting character is great as well, be it Marie, the tower guard, the Canadians, or the dwarf. Doesn't matter how small the part is, all of the actors executed well.

It's shot and scored beautifully as well. This is where the Euros smoke Americans. The production value there is so much better than ours, on average. It's crazy that Americans don't know how to hold a frickin camera and have to shake it around.

I shamefully haven't seen Seven Psychopaths yet, so I need to watch it. McDonagh's older brother, John, directed Calvary and The Guard, the latter of which my dad said is hilarious. Need to see that one too. Has Don Cheadle, Gleeson, Mark Strong, and Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos), so I need to find it and watch it.

Number 1, if you haven't watched this frickin movie, then frickin watch it. Number 2, if you don't like this frickin movie, you better frickin like it. Number 3, if you fall into numbers 1 and 2 and don't frickin listen to me, there'll be frickin hell to pay, I'm frickin tellin ya

I liked it. Farrell was hilarious. But the ending was a little too womp womp for my tastes.

I could see that being an issue for a lot of people. I thought it was perfect for the script though

The Watch

I'm assuming you mean The Guard? The Watch was that horrifying movie with Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn.

Calvary and The Guard are absolutely superb.

I think you'll like Seven Psycopaths a lot. Not on the level you're describing In Bruges to be, but then again, neither is In Bruges. But McDonagh really is a master at that dark humor and a lot of it shows up in Seven Psycopaths. You'll likely enjoy it. Give it a try
