Union members say they are forced to work excessive hours and are not given reasonable rest via meal breaks and sufficient time off between shifts. Leaders say the lowest paid crafts get unlivable wages. And streamers like Netflix, Apple and Amazon are allowed to pay even less under previous agreements that allowed them more flexibility when they were up-and-comers.

So they are mad that they negotiated poorly in the first instance? Sounds like the strike may breach their agreements.

meh that's not entirely accurate. It's based on membership numbers which Netflix and Amazon have surpassed. They aren't paying less.

Apple is the biggest one they are attacking over this.

This has been coming for awhile now, I was wondering when it would be made public.

I fully support this strike. An ex of mine used to work on film crews as a costumer and script supervisor. The hours were murder for what she was paid. She had considered making it a career and joining the union, but instead found more conventional work with stable hours.

Who will be the first multi millionaire actor/actress to come out in support, while not donating anything of note other than a twitter post.

Ed Asner would be out there picketing with them.

Kristen Stewart would give him a solidarity nod from the back of her limo as she drove through the union line.

The agreements are up for renewal. That is why we are hearing about it now. Honestly they've got a pretty good cause for some red arse. Streaming is hardly a start up media anymore and the hours can be back breaking.

The smart thing for the studios and media companies to do would be to agree and lock in a long term agreement. Of course, this being the real world, we will instead get to watch as the studios lose hundreds of millions of dollars to save a few million.

Anyone who has spent time on a film set knows the IA is full of shite.

I spend about half my week on sets. A full day of work on a film set consists of about 40 minutes of actual work, and 7 hours and 20 minutes in crafty.

Maybe the producer's would offer more if the union didnt require literally dozens of people to be paid for standing around and doing nothing most of the day.

So the labor market worked. Its never been easier to get a job. If you want to have an artsy job don't expect to get paid like a skilled baw.

You mean the artsy members of the art department that are often architects / skilled illustrators who start at no less than $50 an hour ?

If the strike happens Monday, which I anticipate …. A key indicator of its longevity will be the actors support.

Personally - I’m in a strange spot filming in asia with only 6 shooting days left as of Monday. If we pause - the studio suddenly has two pretty big actors sitting around. These kinds of expensive scenarios I think will lead to a deal.

They negotiate digital media contracts when netflix was producing $5 million indie junk.

The contract is up, the media landscape has changed wildly, and workers are sick of Disney getting a digital media discount for things it can decide to put out on disney+ or in theaters.

Disney and similar companies not budging in the negotiations on this digital media discount is bullshite. Digital media seems to be the majority of the industry. There should no longer be a discount, and everyone knows it.

It's amazing how many useless people there are on a set.

This is stupid. Film sets have massive sets and massive teams. The nature of a film set dictates there will be downtime. The crane operator waiting for a director to solve a problem might just sit around waiting while that problem is being solved, but that operator is not useless.

Old film sets had a few dozen people there, everyone had an actual role.

This has always been and still is true for small movies. This has never been true for big budget studio movies.
