I think the best solution for all points is to have Rey go to the dark side. Frankly imo it would have been the best for this to occur in TLJ imo and then could have a redemption in the next episode. Redeeming kylo ten isn’t too easy and is anakin/Vader redux. Given what has been set up-trying to make the force “non exclusive” and Rey’s training at this point is a joke she has had trials to harden her beliefs and solidify her feelings. She and ren should join together and then another rise up. May not end like the return of the Jedi with an all isn’t well but it set up an interesting film and then direction for the rest of the universe.

A new fearsome threat to Kylo Ren that is not Rey and the resistance.

This would be awesome honestly. Have some new badass Sith lightsaber user from far off come in as a 3rd party to set up the eventual next trilogy.

My thoughts on how best to proceed with Ep IX
- do the outside invasion story.

Have whatever outside element (the Yuuzhan Vong is what my son tells me) come in, and lay waste to whatever remains of the First Order's military.
They aren't coming in to rescue the galaxy from the First Order, they simply hit everone. Their intent is to destroy all life.

You can use Leia in this; you've shown her to be powered up in the Light Side already. She gets mowed down easily by them, as just the Light Side doesn't affect them. She reaches out to Kylo as she dies, and he understands. He is somewhat more effective, but still too polarized to stop them alone, he needs the balance Rey would bring.

The Rey-Kylo mindlink establishes what must be done, and it's Rey's job to convince the others that Kylo and the Dark Side is their only hope. He's the weapon, she's the control and focus. They both have to fully engage to stand a chance. The goal is to live, not to maintain order or justice... at least, until you stop the invasion. In the back of everybody's mind is what happens after, but we don't have time to dwell on that for now.

Preferably, we'd get a couple movies of action, not just a single film.

At this point, I don't know of another route I'd go, given what we have to work with.

Embrace the suck

Bring Jar Jar back and show us how he coordinated the Gungans seizing the capital after the rebellion to put the first order in power while Luke was having a Ewok rave

Have Leia lose the will to live and just die but make sure someone narrates that she is dying because she has lost the will to live...otherwise...how would we know

Have Luke set star destroyers on fire from beyond the grave

Bring back Han like Casper because of unfinished business

Have R2D2 turn to the dark side and kill BB8

The only way out is a third party. Either by laying waste to the First Order, or fighting both the Order and the Rebels.

Nothing else will make much sense.

And if you want to have a twist...

Rey is stronger in the Force. Have HER go Dark and fully unleash the Dark Side on the outside invaders, and stop them.
Have Kylo, who's been dealing with controlling the Dark Side for years, who was torn about his mother, who might have become more Light oriented when she dies, and who seems to have feelings for Rey... have him reel her back in, after she goes Super Dark to win. Seems like we might be building towards that.
He might even say something like "no Rey, you aren't 'no one'" etc, when he brings her back to the Light. Which would address that bit.

Well completely destroying the story arc set up in TFA, killing your main villain, and wiping out both sides... that's the proverbial burn a franchise to the ground and piss on the ashes. Story wise its an extinction event.

And while Rian Johnson shoulders a fair share of the blame, lets not forget that Abrams is great at thinking up ideas, and then really bad at following through on them over the years. This was going to happen sooner or later, its just a surprise it fell apart so quickly.

So you need a Hail Mary pass. Something so off the wall that might be able to save things because right now you've got nothing to build on.

There can be only one answer. Jar Jar Binks, secret Sith Lord.

Have the single most hated character (before the modern movies) be revealed as this master threat that has slowly been moving the pieces on the chessboard to where he wants them (hell, have Rose revealed to be his secret Apprentice). Have him be the big bad they have to unite to stop. Crawl across the finish line with that and pray it works.

Then, a few years down the road, fire Kennedy and everyone else involved with things now, and do what The Clone Wars did so well... have George Lucas as the vague creative director and talented writers and directors actually carrying everything out.

I mean she was flirting with it even when that cuck was in charge...more so than Luke had at the same point. I know continuity is now shot but she has already flirted with the idea long enough to be a victim to it. Won't happen but it should based off the story they already told.

Whatever it is I can’t imagine it being worse than TLJ. They will probably end it with the entire Star Wars saga being one of Jar Jar’s dreams.

I would have everyone from the TLJ die in the first 5 minutes.

In a horrific crash...with everyone screaming Please God No!

And then I'd try to make an interesting movie with a storyline that was written for excitement and nothing else.

If you required a Dark Force attack to save the Galaxy, I think Rey's stronger than Kylo. She might "go Dark" ala a Dark Phoenix moment. Unleash the Dark Side, and then start quoting Palpatine, "unlimited power!"

And Kylo has to talk her back down.

Hell, I can definitely see this occurring

Can we get a recap of theories proposed so far? Without reviewing the thread, we've got:
a) bad dream; won't happen, but not a bad choice
b) outside attack forcing Ren and Rey to join
c) kill everyone

What else CAN they do? You've killed off the political scheming, there's apparently no government in play at all. The Republic seems gone, and the Resistance can't field a football team without everyone playing both offense and defense at this point.
The Jedi are no more; the Sith never made it to this current group of movies, and whatever Snoke was, he's gone too.
Have a Rey/Ren fight... again? Why, is it best of 7, because she's up 2-0 so far.

Will we finally see some of the older planets again? At this point, that'd actually be a highlight.

WTF is left to do in this franchise? 2 movies ago, it was fertile. Now, it's barren as a desert. I know Disney'a generally retarded, but they spent a few billion on the franchise, you'd have thought they could milk it awhile before running it into the ground. Even a 3rd rate gaming company could have made a more compelling story than what we've gotten so far.

She should have gone bad in TLJ. That would have been compelling.

When Kylo asked her to join him, she should have taken his hand.

That is how the trailers portrayed it too.

Rian Johnson’s entire writing and directing style revolves around building up a certain storyline and then saying, “fooled you,” as he goes the opposite direction just for shock value.

ETA: You know what the most annoying thing is though, no one will admit that it is just a bad movie. Everyone chalks it up to “movie fatigue”.

Kylo will be obsessed with finding Rey, to the detriment of his control of the First Order. Hux will use this to revolt internally.

Rey will be training with Force Ghost Luke on a remote planet. When she opens up about Kylo's vision of her parents, Luke will remind her that not all visions are true. She will see an alternate vision of herself descended from Luke.

Finn, Poe, and Rose will hop around the galaxy trying to win over various planets to their cause, with a mixed degree of success. Every audience member will hate these parts and the cliche ending they set up.

Kylo confronts Rey. Hux shows up with the remaining fleet to kill both of them. Finn, Poe, and Rose show up in the nick of time to distract the remaining First Order fighters. Rey and Kylo start a dual trench run stop Hux. Kylo sacrifices himself to allow Rey to take the final shot.

There will be a Wedge Antilles cameo that everyone applauds.
