Great movie I rarely pass up. Sure the plot is not groundbreaking, but such a great cast in Robin Williams,Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane... and even Hank Azaria as Aguilor Spartacus.

It's really funny. There was a time for Nathan Lane when he was just killing it. Mouse Hunt is another one of his I think from around that time that i never miss when its on TV.

When Robin Williams is teaching Nathan Lane how to act masculine, I was dying.

Fantastic comedy. Once the dinner party starts, you really don’t stop laughing.

Great performances really make the movie, which, like you say, has an oft recycled plot.
Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Hank Azaria, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest are all fantastic in the movie. Chemistry is excellent.

Sure the plot is not groundbreaking,
Well it was when the movie it was a remake of, La Cage Aux Folles, was made in 1978. That film had two sequels and was based on a play of the same name.

I think he’s talking about the general plot of people pretending to be something other than they are for a short time because of a perceived necessary need.
It’s a theme as old as the hills and has been mined often.

Legit top 3 comedy of the 90s.
"Talk about your purple mountains majesty..."
"I think he was framed...I won't believe anything until a full autopsy is done."
[everyone looks around in terror]
"That's just what Rush Limbaugh said."
The dinner party really is like 20 minutes straight of non-stop gutbusters.

Exactly. It's a fairly common trope in stage plays.

And it was considered progressive as frick when it was made in the 70s and then again in the 90s.

Dad, you’ve gotta get back out there. Everything is going to hell!
He didn’t make an entree.
What!? You mean all we have is soup!?
Yo peasant soup is an entree! What do you think I put so much in it for!?
Shut up! Here’s a note for Catherine. Go put it on the downstairs door. I’ve got to get back out there before they eat enough to see the bottom of the bowls.
You give me a million things to do and no time to do!
Shut up! It’s okay! We’re alright! It’s fine! Just shut up God damn you! It’s alright! Stop crying! God damn you! What are you standing there for!? Go! Go! She’ll be here any minute! Go! God dammit! frick the shrimp!

One of the great things about the movie imo is how these two very different families come together in the end to help each other. No one is trying to screw the other. Sure, the Goldmans are deceiving the Keeleys and the Keeleys don’t approve of the Goldmans in the story. Yet in the end the Keeleys give their blessing and attend the wedding and the Goldmans help sneak the Keeleys out of the club so they won’t be seen by the media.
The antagonists in the story are not the Keeleys or the Goldmans but the media. The bad guys, the real scumbags, are the media.
Nathan Lane’s words to Gene Hackman after the gig was up: Kevin, nothing’s changed. Everything we said is the same. Except for one tiny difference. Well, not tiny.

It is Greek. Greek boys, actually. Uh, naked Greek boys.
Albert: And girls. Don’t you have any girls on your bowl
Val: I have one.
Albert: So do I! Oh, look! Senator Keeley, there. I think that’s a girl.
Senator Keeley: Then it’s been a long time since you’ve seen one. That’s a boy. I may need glasses, but I can see that.
