I imagine Victoria wont even be in the next episode, I figured they would just start it with Ted and her broken up and "the gang" at Mclarens talking about it.
Dont think so. I think they trie to do some eye tricks on people. I think Ted ends up breaking up with Victoria and meeting the mother after Barneys wedding. They made it seem like it was at the same point but at the bottom it said "a little ways down the road..".

They seemed so determined to "shock" people that i could see them not doing that just because its been an internet theory for a while

That's possible, but that would piss me off for two reasons: 1) I don't like Victoria, so it would annoy me if she hangs around for the whole season and 2) Ted already realizes that he doesn't love her, meaning he's just going to be a pussy for the whole season

I have more faith in the writers than that

I wish. I lost that faith after Ted confessing his love for Robin last season
Posted on 9/27/12 at 2:36 pm to Cap Crunch
Robin obviously was at her own wedding wearing a white dress and all, but was Barney definitely the groom? Maybe I missed the reference but all I remember seeing was Barney wanting to leave to change his tie (not the duck tie)? Every future look at Barney's wedding has him wearing the duck tie and they love playing misdirection games so I could see Barney not even being the groom in that flash forward.

She asks how bad barney is freaking out, I dont see any oter reason he would be freaking out unless he was the groom

You don't see any other reason yet. Like I said, they seem to love playing misdirection and this is just the first episode of the season. Either they will not mention this story line again for several episodes, which is possible, or the train platform at "Robin's wedding" was just another time their paths crossed but they didn't meet.

I could see this. Everyone keeps mentioning Barney's sister, when has this ever been mentioned? I didn't even realize he had a sister.
ETA by this I mean someone who was there the whole time but we didn't really know who they were. I don't believe this sister theory.

I'm going to go back and post something that I posted later on in last season's finale. Just for the sake of discussion, and because I feel like a few people in this thread are on the same page.
I've seen every episode of this show. After following this season, and seeing the finale last night, I can't help but think that this show has fallen off hard.
This show is full of circular development and plot lines that make the progression of this show almost unbearable. They've slowed character development to a crawl, I'm guessing because they don't know how many seasons that they have left. I can respect the process of writing and producing a great sitcom like HIMYM, but come on. Every character that is introduced is pretty much useless (the girl that Ted dated that didn't want the building torn down, the dude from Harold and Kumar, the stripper that Barney marries). All of them served their purpose to get the viewers to step outside of the original group of 5 friends, but ultimately, the main plots still rotate inside that immediate circle of 5 friends.
This show goes NOWHERE now. Nowhere at all. They played the whole "and that's where I met your mother", "your mother was in that same room/building/street", "which just so happened to be where your mother..." you get the point. They played that card so many times that it got frustrating. So they just started introducing characters and developments that are easily expendable.
It was obvious, when you go back and watch the older seasons, when the show was renewed for more seasons. They slow development all the way down, they add new characters that really bring nothing to the mix, and they add little subplots. It all feels like filler that takes up the entire season before the group of 5 friends are advanced at the very end of the season.
It's getting frustrating to follow this show now. I still watch because I feel like I've already invested a lot of interest and viewing into this show. I'm not going to skip out on the last season or anything, but I feel like the writers are selling themselves short and continually playing the viewer for a fool.
I think that the end to this past season was a cop out, and I hope that they get some sort of timeline for their seasons that they have remaining so they can develop the plot and characters accordingly.

I don't think the show ever intended for the actual plot of "finding the mother" to be the focus.
That was the main arch obviously but the shows focus is really all the whacky and zany things that happen to "the friends" along the way.
Well after 8 seasons, the viewers have basically gotten tired of watching the same shite happen over and over and thus the whacky and zany things we once thought were funny, are now just kind of annoying.
What I'm saying is character development and plot progression have never been the focus. Everyone is just tired of the same old formula at this point.

Even more, meeting the Mother ENDS the show. The story is over once the Mother is introduced, so it's clearly a framing device. They had to drag it out or else the show goes off the air.
And honestly, Ted's the least interesting character, so I'm cool with it. I'm more emotionally invested in Marshall and Lilly's slow happy ending.

But....They also can't just end the show when they meet.
Why not?
If the name of the show is, again, "How I MET your mother"?
He's telling his kids this long arse story about how he meets their mother. That's it.
I also think its Barney's sister, who meets the random/not random qualifications. FWIW.

Did the guitar in the taxi trunk give anything away? I didn't see the first few seasons so I may have missed a tie-in.

Not anything more than the umbrella didn't already tell us. He did say his ideal wife played in a band or something like that.

She had been mentioned a couple of times, but I can't think of any specifics. I definitely think it'll be a character like that though

The same thing the umbrella did. It is Rachel Bilson's roommate.
You guys need to stop getting frustrated over the expendable characters and useless relationships because that is simply how this show works. If Ted met his wife early, then this show would be half a season.
The life span of a sitcom seems to be about seven years. We are nearing the end of the road, so humor often gets sacrificed for plot development (yes, there has been some) near the end because we get so invested in the character's life because we need closure on their lives.
I really do not know what I want to happen from here on out. I just want to enjoy the ride.
