“No, I am your father” is the big cliffhanger from Ep V.

Here's a theory I like..
quote:

Assuming that there were cameras and microphones in the Death Star's detention center, and that Vader was smart enough to check them after Leia escaped, he would have gotten all the information he needed from Luke's introduction:

[Luke, dressed as a storm trooper, opens the door to Leia's detention cell.]

Princess Leia Organa: Aren't you a little short for a storm trooper?

Luke Skywalker: Huh? Oh, the uniform. [removes his helmet] I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you!

Princess Leia Organa: You're who?

Luke Skywalker: I'm here to rescue you! Look, I've got your R2-unit and I'm here with Ben Kenobi!

Princess Leia Organa: Ben Kenobi? He's here!?

Because the OT is a really flawed trilogy. But Star Wars fans act like the films are perfection.

Exactly. People act like the first 3 were gold. But it’s flawed with plot holes. Then they get mad when new episodes show supernatural shite.

Like it’s okay to assume light speed is normal. But drop a bomb in space and these people lose their shite. But gravity!!!

Let’s hide Ben Kenobi but change his first name. No one will know. That works!!

Skywalker is like ‘Smith’ in the SW universe though.

And that's another thing ...
At the end of III, Revenge of the Sith, Anakin has three new amputations and third degree burns over most of what's left of his body. The medical droids attach new limbs and then put his burnt arse into the Darth Vader suit. What do you think that thing smelled like in a few days? He wouldn't have to choke out people who disappoint him using the Force, the smell of decaying flesh would probably knock them out.

No shite. Give the baby a nom de guerre. Call him Luke Desertdweller or something. Or maybe even Uncle Owen's last name, like Leia became an Organa. That would have been a good idea!

Obi-Wan put Luke on the one planet he knew Anakin would NEVER willingly go back to.

That comic has been stated as canon.

Why would Anakin/Vader never go back to Tatooine? Because that's where his mother died?

The suit was designed to torture him for his failure so this is a possibility.

In Return of the Jedi (or maybe it was Empire Strikes Back", Darth Vader tells Luke "I am your father." How does Vader know?

If you're not even sure which movie this is in I have to assume you've never watched the movies more than once.

Because his last name was Skywalker

Like Anakin Skywalker

Also, there's that little scene where the emperor straight up tells him Luke is the son of Anikan Skywalker. Did the OP never watch the movies?

No one on the first page remembers that? Emperor says Luke is the son of Anakin and must therefore die. Vader says if he can be turned he could be a powerful allyt.

George Lucas consistently says that he always envisioned each episode as a segment of one movie. He compares it to the serials shown before movies in the theatre back in the '30s.

Again, it's like poetry. It rhymes.

Yep, its the comic. When Marvel got the rights to publish Star Wars again they made their stories canon. Those stories take place between Star Wars and Empire.

This is the biggest flaw. It is pretty easy to figure out how he knew Luke was his son. But, how in the world would he not figure out Leia was his daughter? Doesn't make sense.

It's very possible that Darth Vader is so twisted and corrupted by the dark side that he forgot his own name and past (much like Gollum in Lord of the Rings). When Obi-Wan and Luke are reintroduced into his life, there's a tremor in the Force and he starts to remember.

Also, the galaxy is huge and after the Clone Wars, many people most likely didn't know what happened to Anakin Skywalker. Some probably considered him a hero and might have even taken his last name. So the fact that Luke's last name is Skywalker might not mean much. (This is just a theory of mine, not canon.)

Ding Ding.

Emperor tells Vader that the son of Skywalker cannot be allowed to become a Jedi. Vader then says if he can be turned, he could become a powerful ally. The audience doesn't know it until the end of the movie, but Vader knew then.

Oh no, he very much remembers his past and is driven by "Anakin's" failure to save Padme. Add in the physical torture he is constantly experiencing and he is consumed by the Dark Side of the Force. Any part of Vader that was Anakin seems to be lost. Which is why he, and Palpatine, use Anakin when referring to the past instead of "I/me" or "you", they both view Vader as a separate person from Anakin. A rebirth if you will. When Luke, and subsequently Leia, are revealed to Vader through the Force, the Light starts to break through the Dark. It is why the title of XI is "Return of the Jedi" instead of something like "Redemption of the Jedi".

I felt like I was taking crazy pills reading this thread. Not sure how anyone that has watched the movies could not know the answer. Should have been the shortest thread in a while. How'd he know? Palpatine told him in TESB. The end.

Most people think Vader already knew by then, which would explain him being obsessed with finding Luke, and mentioning him by name to Admiral Ozzel.

Also, that line is a fairly recent addition, in 2004. Before then, the two refer to Luke as the son of Skywalker as if it were a long known fact.
