How can someone tell if a show nowadays has flopped or not?

With streaming and pay services and all that. Is there some sort of rating service for that sort of thing?
Like this Acolyte show for instance. There's alot of bitching about it and it seems everyone thinks it sucks. Has it actually flopped or is it flopping? Is there some sort of Nielson service for stuff like this?
I wonder if it's actually doing poorly or not.

if they renew it or not.

Its streaming numbers are lower than Ashoka. It’s lowest streaming Star Wars series yet.

They know how many times the show is opened in the app.

They know. We don’t. They can report whatever they want. You really think Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon movies are getting enough viewers for multiple extended cuts? More movies? Who knows. But Netflix wants you to think it does.

Ok. Is this sort of info released to the public? How does the public know if people are watching a show or not? Is there some sort of ratings system?

I’d bet half of the viewership are hate watching. Sort of like the entertainment you get from watching a train wreck.

Minutes viewed is the best indicator. All the new “ratings” are fake.

Does Disney release this info? How is this made public?

This is probably the truth of it.

To actually answer your question, Nielsen does track streaming numbers but it takes weeks for them to actually release them. The streaming services themselves do release viewer numbers but people either do or do not believe them depending on who's trying to win which side of an argument.
Ratings services like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes are either trusted or not trusted depending on who's trying to win which side of an argument. Both have user scores that can be vulnerable to review bombing or review padding.
There is also a robust cottage industry of youtubers/podcasters/bloggers that seem to exist solely to drive outrage towards certain studios/IPs/actors/etc.

Well I asked gooble if the show has flopped or is flopping and I really didn't get any sort of a concrete answer.
I saw a blurb where 4.8 million people watched the first episode. That seems like alot. Sounds like the show is doing pretty well.

Ok. Well it's the viewer numbers that interest me. There's so much controversy with The Acolyte that I get the feeling mass quantities of people are watching it.

Neilsen ratings does release minutes viewed. Those numbers are extrapolated from sample audiences, like has always been done with ratings, but it does track minutes viewed. They also tend to be about a month behind I believe, so we won't know about the Acolyte for several more weeks. I'm not sure why it takes them so long to compile all the data.

It seems to be doing okay, which makes sense because as a show it is okay.
It's not particularly good or particularly bad. It's okay.
If you go on social media of any type you'll typically find a fairly balanced number of folks who either say "It's groundbreaking, incredible storytelling for the Star Wars universe!" or "It's absolutely the worst Star Wars product that ever been conceived!".
That's usually a pretty good indicator that its "okay".

You’re correct but they get their info from the service that puts out the content. In this instance they get it from Disney. 3rd party analytics is your best bet for accuracy.

Now that seems like a really good measure.

So there's probably more hope that the show will flop than there is actual flopping.

Correct.
Balanced by a good amount of hope that show is succeeding than there is actual success.

My guess is that folks generally don't mind the wokish direction Disney is taking Star Wars nearly as much as this board wants to believe, but the numbers will tell the tale I suppose.
