Can't speak to every visual nuance, but the loopy electric guitar score in the opening fight sequence is straight cheese nuts

Is "cheese nuts" a good, or bad thing?

Liam Neesan would have destroyed Daniel Day Lewis IRL, so not very accurate.

Many years ago, I read a book on the New York of that day. The tenements in that area were so huge and densely populated and ridiculously dangerous, the police wouldn't go near them. If a perp ran into those areas they'd consider them lost.

Knowing DDL's methods, he probably trained extensively in 19th century knife fighting.

Let's look at the tale of the tape.

Liam Neeson is 65 yo, measures in at 6'-4" and is solid.

Daniel Day Lewis is 60 yo, measures 6'-2" and could be described as lanky at best.

DDL may be a bit younger, but I'm still giving Liam the edge due to the size advantage.

There are some pretty great dollop podcast episodes on William Poole, the know nothing party and the Bowery boys that give a decent picture of how crazy that time in NYC was.

They made Boss Tweed look like a bitch for the gangs instead of the other way around. Tammany Hall ran that city for decades not street thugs.

I think the documentary "Blood Fueds" that they showed on the History channel or is it AHC?? I don't fricking know. Anyways one of these channels is closer to showing how "Bill the Butcher" and "John Morrissey" and their gangs the "Bowery Boys" and "Dead Rabbits" looked and lived than this movie "Gangs of New York" did imo.

That's what I gathered when Googling some comparisons. The orchestrated dramatic battles didn't happen.

They were Irish

They probably didn't know where they were half of the time because they were so drunk

Being 60% Irish, I can confirm this

I'm pretty sure the melees are accurate

ETA: I just mean them going at it drunk with knives and clubs lol

It was on AHC. Bill the Butcher beat Morrissey's arse in a boxing match and Morrissey sent two Dead Rabbits to shoot and eventually kill Bill. Morrissey went on to be a US Senator

It's not how I remember it, but 1863 was a long time ago.

The way they fought has got to be bullshite, no shields, no strategy, no working together?

Shields?!? Really? Those went out with the longbow and then gunpowder.

Strategy? These are gang fights, and I think they are portrayed reasonably if somewhat hollywoodized. Certainly better than choreographed action movie fights.

BTW - the New York gangs are also featured heavily in one of my favorite books - Winter's Tale. There is very little difference in the treatment between the two and I suspect that Winter's Tale may have influenced Gangs of New York. Unfortunately when they finally made a movie from Winter's Tale it was dogshit.
