Hollywood Prepares to Delay Another Slew of Blockbusters

Nobody expected mass immunization overnight, but with vaccinations being administered at a crawl in the U.S., it now looks like Warner Bros. may have been forward-thinking. Numerous films remain on the release calendar for early 2021, yet cases of the virus in many areas are higher than ever and approximately 65% of U.S. theaters — including those in popular markets like New York and Los Angeles — remain closed. Getting back to the movies in any normal fashion seems as unrealistic today as it did last March when cinemas across the nation were shuttered.
To be sure, the majority of potential blockbusters have already been postponed to mid-summer or later. But there are a handful of films scheduled for the first quarter of the year: Sony’s “Cinderella” starring Camila Cabello (Feb. 5), Disney and 20th Century’s “The King’s Man” (March 12) and Jared Leto’s superhero thriller “Morbius” also from Sony (March 19), to name a few. These seem very unlikely to keep their theatrical release dates, at least without embracing some kind of hybrid digital or video-on-demand debut.
Even in traditional times, the stretch between January and March is kind of a cinematic dumping ground. So it’s not entirely unexpected that the current release calendar doesn’t pick up in a meaningful way until May, with the debuts of Disney and Marvel’s “Black Widow” (May 7), Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Godzilla vs Kong” (May 21), Ryan Reynolds’ “Free Guy” from 20th Century Studios (May 21), Paramount’s “Infinite” starring Mark Wahlberg (May 28), Disney’s “Cruella” with Emma Stone (May 28) and Universal’s “F9” (May 28). But many of these titles are expected to shift as well if conditions don’t drastically improve in the next month or so.
Hollywood players will continue to take different approaches to operating and finding the best way to reach audiences during the pandemic. Disney, Warner Bros. and Universal appear more primed to ride out the next few months, with contingency plans that range from day-and-date releases on streaming services to accelerated premium video-on-demand windows. Neither Sony nor Paramount have a streaming service ready to offload titles, so those companies will probably continue to delay release dates or sell their movies to platforms like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Paramount has auctioned off most of its upcoming movies and doesn’t have anything on the horizon until “A Quiet Place Part II” on April 23, which it has no plans to sell.

fricking cucks. I want to support my local non Chicom theaters but Hollywood can suck a hot wet fart out of my arse

Going to delay themselves into irrelevance.

Just release them all on VOD and be done with it.

WB is finding out that doing so is pissing off their directors and production companies.
Legendary Entertainment is pissed that Dune and Godzilla Vs Kong Kong are set for HBO Max rather than a theatrical release. And they are just the first to voice this.

While they are doing this, the world is quickly adapting to the new normal of not going to movie theaters.
Theaters were already in trouble before this, the longer they are closed the more people who used to go will find they don't need or want to go to them anymore.
People are largely creatures of habit and new habits are being formed in regards to entertainment.

I wouldn’t shed a tear if a meteor hit Hollywood during the Oscars.

Literally none of those interest me at all. Not even to watch period, let alone see in theaters.
I don't know what Free Guy or F9 are about, but would be interested in trailers for both to gauge my interest.
Also really like the first Quiet Place, and will eventually see the sequel (prequel?).
But one problem Hollywood has is that it seems to be ready to release movies that tons of people won't care about.

I think Hollywood is well on the way to becoming obsolete regardless of Covid. Independent film making may be the future.

King's Man and Black Widow interest me. I'm getting tired of them continuing to push Black Widow.
Cruella doesn't interest me because I'm tired of Disney telling us the stories from the point of view of the traditional villain. Cruella DeVille is one of the most repulsive and repugnant characters there is. I don't want to see any effort to humanize her.

the level of major production happening right now is staggering and going to skyrocket once the vaccine become available. And the worldwide market is growing at a rapid pace ... You may reduce it to "Hollywood", but global filmmaking is alive and well. I'm on a 60 million dollar feature now and have turned down jobs in Toronto and Greece in the last week.

Just one question.
When is Top Gun Maverick coming out? That's all that matters.

Lighten up, Francis. She's a fictional character and no dogs really died.

They know they are blockbusters already?

Stupid fricking politicians. These companies and the FDA told the world when to expect them and how many. All they had to do was rent out a few large buildings across each city, hire some people who are trained at giving injections, and tell people who fit a predetermined set of criteria when and where to show up. Then give the rest to medical and nursing facilities to administer at will. And yet they had zero plan, just made shite up at the last minute. Hell, they let 66% of all vaccinations go to waste in NY because they were unable to figure it out. fricking pathetic.

You must like foreign movies. Pretty unpopular opinion around here. What's your favorite Italian neo-realist flick? More of a Romanian New Wave guy?

Based on the synopsis and teaser trailer, that's not what Cruella will be. I'm not itching to see it either, but the teaser shows cruella literally sowing together dog skins.

If I sign a document promising to also see it on the big screen the first week it gets released there, can they just put the new James Bond on VOD already?

Ah. True.
Then definitely place that one in my “don’t care about” list. I haven’t seen a F&F movie since the second one, and that one sucked arse. (Yes I know they are different now, but just not really my thing)
