Probably my favorite sit-com ever. Lily is the worst for sure. Barney carries the show. The ending...

The ending was revealing the entire show was “here’s why I settled for your mother and since she died and who I actually wanted is available I’m gonna take another shot.”

I actually didn’t mind the ending as much as I minded that they had to rush it. I wanted another hour-long episode. It feels like the glaze over the fact that Ted was with the mother for around seven years. He didn’t actually settle for her, they just didn’t get to build on the relationship like they should have.

Agree that Lily was the worst, and Marshall is a saint for putting up with everything.

My favorite episodes:
1. Bad News + Last Words (Marshall’s dad’s death and the funeral)
2. Farhampton - Speech at the train station from Klaus, first glance at the mother, foreshadowing with The Funeral by Band of Horses to end the episode
3. The Playbook
4. Slapsgiving
5. Three Days of Snow, The Naked Man, Slap Bet, and The Bro Mitzvah are all right here for me.

Good list. They did a good job of mixing the funny in with the feels with Marshall's dad.

The Playbook is very good. I like the Liberty Bell episode, the prank episode with Barney and Marshall, the episode where Ted's class has a Robin Sherbostky drinking game, and all the episodes where they rag on Canada

I agree with most on here that the way they ended it with Robin, Ted, and the mother makes me angry still. However, the worst part of the end was spending an entire season leading up to Barney and Robin's wedding only for them to gloss over their divorce in a span of about 3 minutes.

Unwatchable. I still get pissed when I see these episodes in reruns.

So many great episodes. So many people are upset by the ending, which I understand. Just wish they had one extra episode to tie things up.

I agree but when I think of the show, I dont really think of the ending anymore. Ive forced myself just to deny it. The show ends for me when Ted finally meets the mother

It would be an episode of awkward looks between Ted's kids and Robin as they realize how much of her sex life they know about.

All of these:

I hate that show because the creator started the show with how he wanted to end it and insisted upon forcing that ending instead of really looking at how the characters had developed over the course of the run. Everyone regressed just so Ted could end up with Robin and they could show that clip they shot ten years ago when the first season started.

I get that they filmed the kids final scene when they filmed the start of season 2 so they would not age. The problem I have was we really were never supposed to meet the mother. When they filmed that ending she really was not supposed to be in the story until they met at the train station.

The problem is they went with the money grab to make season 9 and put the mother in everyone's lives. We see how she met all the friends, we see her and Ted meeting, going on a date, getting engaged, etc. and see how she checks all the boxes. She's a nerd like him, she loves going to the Renaissance fair, she gets why they call the bar Puzzles! They should have either stuck by their original plan and not introduce her except at the very end or do the complete 180 pivot of season 9 and throw out the kids ending.

I’ve been through the series a few times and watch re-runs randomly. There are highs and lows of the seasons. Some are really strong (Season 4), some are somewhat weak. I will still maintain they should have combined Seasons 8 and 9 and made one really strong season. But even some of the bad episodes are funny. Here is my definitive, Top 11 episodes. The first two are in order, the other 9 are in no particular order. I may have left one out, but I don’t think so.

1. The Playbook- Barney’s best episode. I’ll go back and watch this episode if I’m trying to kill a few minutes.

2. The Ducky Tie- This is the other episode I’ll watch independently when I need a break. The fast paced episode has Barney’s big plan, Victoria, and a fast paced tempo.

Pilot- From the first episode, you think you know how the show ends, then the ruin it, just to fix it in Season 9.

Ten Sessions- One of my favorite dates Ted ever went on. Well thought out episode and just enjoyable to watch.

How Your Mother Met Me- Getting a glimpse into 9 seasons of HIMYM from her point of view in one episode was nice. I would have loved it to be a two part episode where they really get into it.

Slap Bet- Gave me one of my favorite things about the show- the slap bet.

Girls Versus Suits- I really like NPH and his Tony shows. This was a HIMYM version.

The Perfect Week- Barney trying to run plays 7 days in a row, Jim Nantz, I mean, what’s not to love.

The Final Page, parts 1 and 2- The trend of Barney’s big plays being on this list is evidence he is my favorite character. The big play to get Robin was great.

How I Met Everyone Else- The use of the Mendoza line from baseball, the hot/crazy scale and some backstory. Phenomenal episode.

Bedtime Stories- While this isn’t on anyone’s top list, this was one of my favorites. It didn’t add anything to the story. It wasn’t overly funny. It did feature Lin Manuel Miranda before Hamilton fame. But having an entire episode in rhyme was a treat. A true treat. The stories were good, but nothing great. The rhyming is what made this episode make the list.

Lily and her fracking art. She sucks. Total garbage. She should have been ostracized by everyone. Never to be seen again.

How I met your STEPmother is just like GOT, A great show whose crappy finale ruined the show for most people.

The difference is that while both shows fell of a cliff their last couple seasons, when it came down to the ending, GOTs still had an infinite amount of choices they could’ve made and they chose the worst and most illogical one

HIMYM just made the only ending there really was due to the previously mentioned bad seasons left them with their hands tied a bit. You can not like the way it ended, but logically it actually checks out and they clearly meant to do this for years obviously.

The ending of GOT really defined the show for me and makes me not care about the previous seasons anymore. I still love watching HIMYM. As someone already put it, even bad episodes are still funny and entertaining.

The entire last season is really kind of a slap in the face.

Spoiler for whomever was saying they hadn't finished yet:

You spend 20+ episodes on the final season building up a wedding and how those two are truly right for each other, then they break up 10 minutes into the final episode.

It's the equivalent of the "it was all a dream" trope.

That is a great way to explain it. Weekly reminders of why Robin and Barney is meant to be only to throw it away at the end.

I never bought them together. Every time they got together it was an absolute disaster.

Barney should’ve ended up with the stripper. That’s when he showed the most growth and connection during the show. But it happened 1-2 seasons too early so they had to break them up to keep the plot going.
