Insulting to who? His performance was great. It would have been very easy for Grant to misstep slightly and deliver a ham-fisted performance. And the "religious monologues" were the best thing about the movie. It's nice when a writer has done a little homework and doesn't just rely on stock cliches.

That said, the ending definitely doesn't stand up to closer scrutiny. I have mixed feelings about that though. I think the writers may have made an error in what it thought the audience wanted. Or maybe they just wrote themselves into a corner they couldn't get out. (As you mentioned, it does feel a bit tacked on as an afterthought.) The fact it doesn't quite work, though, is a testament to the effective work done in the first two acts. Watching the third act is a good reminder of how the rest of the movie would've felt had the writers played by the old rulebook from the start.

Movie was good but I wish the reveal would have had some supernaturalness to it.

It’s worth it tho just to see Grant devour scenes.

It seems pretty supernatural to me that 2 women can’t whoop the crap out of some goofy white old man in any movie these days.

SPOILER

I mean it's a fictional movie so there has to be some suspension of disbelief, but if we're going the realism route, there should've been a half-dozen or so ways that each of those prior captive girls' trails ended cold at this house, and no one had (presumably) ever bothered to investigate it any further up until this point? Everyone just shows up to inquire briefly, continues on with their mission, and leaves completely satisfied like Eric Forman?

I thought it was good.

Their movies can be hit or miss, this one's a hit.

With that said, most of the millennials who have been subjected to all of these horrible movies over the past 10 years or so will love it.

Am I missing something? Are millennials the only people that existed to watch movies the past 10 years?

Yeah this is the standard for modern horror, especially "elevated" horror.

Solid concept and 1st act, engaging 2nd act, shits on self in the final act.

Hugh Grant FEASTED though. I went to look at the Oscar noms and was insulted he wasn't even nominated. It's worth watching to [fill in metaphor] for that first 75 minutes.

I do have a bad taste in my mouth for most movies that have the villain orchestrate this perfect plan where everything has to go perfectly. It just doesn't hold up and you can poke 100 holes.

This movie did also rip off Speak No Evil (the good one, not the shitty American version) and Martyrs (although this was a red herring of sorts) a bit. Those are much better movies and people should watch them instead.

I think this movie does say a lot about people who engage in religious debates much more than religion itself.

No surprise you jacked off to his mediocre performance in this stinker.

It's pretty simple, it takes a complete movie with great acting to move the needle. I refuse the premise that Grant delivered some grandiose performance in a movie that went to shite as most A24s do. If you want to tout a HG performance in a movie that delivered, The Gentlemen hits that mark more than this one, which isn't saying a lot.

Talk about trying hard. This is dumb. If you want an example of an A24 Horror movie with fantastic acting, I point you to Toni Collette's Oscar snub for Hereditary.

Neither of these 2 classics should be in the same discussion as Heretic. It's not even in the same ballpark, like, at all. It's good to see that you have been exposed to at least 2 great movies though, I suppose.

Hugh Grant’s best career performance is Paddington 2. Heretic didn’t quite reach that level but I thought HG was still excellent. The movie overall was another Longlegs to me. Worth watching for the lead actor that carries the movie through a terrible third act.

The vast majority of the posters on the Movie/TV Board have awful taste in horror movies, so not surprising.

Great film. Hugh Grant was fantastic.

Not sure about you people that hated it. It's not that edgy to be contrarian. You're the kind of people that go to a comedy show and get offended. Ya should have stayed home, Karen.

No film is perfect. Holes can always be poked. I watch something to be entertained and this one absolutely nailed it.
