Great documentary. All doc makers should study the style of this one--extremely well done.

We watched American Idol in those couple of years where Jimmy Iovine did some consulting with the singers--great that this came out because many folks had no idea who he was when he was on that show.

But after watching all of Dre's parts of the documentary, it made me respect the hell of that man even more so that I did. Hearing him jamming out to Nirvana is what really sold me.
Always makes me laugh when I hear comments like this as if Black guys aren't in to White music, well they are. But Dre is a music guy period, so he's into all types of music. If the beat is rocking, Dr. Dre is a fan, you can bet on that. But music is the universal language that all types of people listen to. White guys listening to Black music, Black guys listening to White music, Hispanics listening to rock and rap, I've seen it all. So, it does not surprise me, but I watched this excellent documentary from start to finish, Sunday - Wednesday.

It rocked and taught me some things I didn't know that surprised me like Jimmy Iovine banging Stevie Nicks. Lol I didn't know that and now I know. But the D.O.C. story blew me away. Dude was an awesome rapper on the level of Tupac and all the great rappers that came up. I wondered why he dropped off the planet back in the day and now I know why. That was just crazy him getting smashed like that and flying off the freeway permanently ending his career. SMH Dre said 4 of his front teeth were stuck in a tree. WTF Dude is lucky to be alive.

"Let the Bass Go" got me into serious sound equipment. The crap I had kept mixing the bass drum with the mid bass. Then, I heard it on my friend's dad's system and I was hooked. I started cutting grass and learning how to install car stereos at 14 and had my entire system before I even had a car.

Awesome series. Although the last episode felt like an Apple commercial.

This was one of my favorite documentaries ever. I had heard of Iovine growing up following Dre, Em, etc but I never knew just how big/influential he was in music.

Despite the fact that a lot of the early Dre stuff was a repeat of stuff we knew it drew me in right away.

I can't believe that little SOB dated Stevie Nicks. I'd never heard of him before watching the doc so every step he took up the ladder was like a movie twist to me, it was fascinating.

Dr. Dre's new house... I think that thing is larger than the Mall of Louisiana

I just finished this last night. Wow. That was awesome. I never really knew much about Dre, but I respect him a lot now. It's funny because I always liked the song "Forgot About Dre" with Eminem and Dre, but I never really actually listened to the words. Listen to it now and you weill really get everything that they are talking about. It's basically a huge dis track.

Also, the way the series was put together is great. I noticed there were no voice overs telling the story. The director/producer put all of the artist interviews together in a way that the story was told so well. Pretty awesome.

Maybe I'm still just hyped up about it. Anyone else like it this much?

Was late to the game on this one, but as others have said...this is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen! Loved that it had enough material for 4 episodes. Would also be interested on a mini documentary on the source awards event(s) with all the different groups.

Jimmy Iovine is a marketing genius! Shoot even product genius. correct me if I misunderstood that part of the episode, but without Jimmy the iPod may not be what we all know it to be now. sure we would have the mp3 players evolving but idk about them being on the same level as the iPod idea he took to Steve Jobs. And the fact that Beats by Dre was thought up in literally a 10 minute conversation that started with Dre asking him about sneaker endorsement!! Crazy and amazing stuff!

Loved it. Shows how talented Dre and Eminem are. How badass was that when Eminem just walked in the studio and Dre put on the beat he'd been working on and Eminem just started saying "Hi, my name is".

oh for sure! the short time span that a lot of things got accomplished in was unbelievable to me! loved how during a big house party, Dre would hear a beat or someone like Snoop spit a random verse and said something like "hold up, lets go to the studio and put it down!" average minds just aren't wired like that.

To think Iovine and Interscope got Trent out of his TVT deal and started Nothing records, discovering Marylin Manson, and Dr. Dre out of his deal with Ruthless Records, and founding Death Row and discovering Snoop Dog within a 2 year time span is ridiculous.

First time caller:

I don't know anything about rap and very little about modern pop music. Will I enjoy this series?

(I know the names... I just don't know their music.)

I'll hang up for my answer.

I think you will like the first 2 episodes, especially the 2nd. After that, you may stick around just because those two are so good.

Dre is about the only reason I listen to any sort of rap - at all.
