I have to say that Harry and Ginny’s relationship is one of the worst in literary and cinematic history. Really none of it is believable. First off between OotP and HBP Ginny’s personality changes radically, from really not having a character to just being kind of spunky... and that’s the extent of her character, with none of this happening in the film either. She by no means passes the Plinkett Test. Plus she’s utilized to zero effect in the final book.

Then there’s Luna. She certainly passes the Plinkett Test. Luna is also the only person really in the story (aside from Dumbledore) who actually understands Harry and I think he’s the only one who understands her. They are each other’s true emotional crutch through second half of the story, and I think they have undeniable chemistry. Both of them find the other very enduring and is in everyway a better match for Harry than Ginny (which is creepy on top of that given she’s basically his little sister).

She kind of comes at the perfect point in the story for a romance to happen. First off Harry is only interested in Cho because she’s hot, plays Quidditch, and that’s really it. Fine for a shallow teenage love story. Meanwhile there’s the weird chick on the side who is actually there for him, understands what he’s going through that no one else can relate to, and they form an honest bond and friendship. And of course Harry gets dumped by the hot chick. You really don’t have to change a single line from OotP for this to work.

Next comes HBP. First off Luna comments on the Quidditch game which Harry finds very entertaining and endearing. Next he kind of accidentally asks her to Slughorn’s ball. The ball should have been the moment where Harry realizes he has actual feelings for Luna and can’t really comprehend it given that she’s batty. He’s conflicted about this for a few chapters, realizes that no one has understood him like Luna has and vice versa, and they kiss a few chapters later. He breaks up with her like he did Ginny due to going to hunt Horcruxes.

Then comes DH. Snape knows about Harry’s relationship to Luna and reluctantly tells Voldemort. He abducts Luna from the Hogwarts Express to get to Harry and says he’ll let her go if he turns himself over. Harry becomes furious, eventually goes to her father, that ends the same and Harry is caught. They get out of Malloy Manor the same way. Except Luna now comes along in hunting for Horcruxes, she destroys Ravenclaw’s Diadem, and the story ends roughly the same.

So agree or disagree?

Do you want to be in Hollywood so bad that you try to rewrite everything? Put on your big boy pants, go out there, suck some Weinstein knob and be a writer.

And you're wrong, Harry should've ended up with Hermione.

My point is you don’t have to rewrite much of the story to make this work. It seemed to be setting this up if anything. And Ginny doesn’t do shite in the final novel, while Luna does. Really Ginny is just around... and that’s it. I’ve never seen a Twilight movie or read the books, but I have a hard time believing it’s worse than this.

Scruffy agrees.

Ginny is a waste of a character. She has zero depth and no personality. It is one of the more forced relationships in a book series and movies. The relationship is built on nothing really.

Same goes for the Hermione and Ron relationship, although I feel their relationship is even more forced.

Harry didn't have time for a girlfriend. Too much shite he had to take care of.

I'm inclined to disagree because as much as I love the entire series, it's all bull shite.

Who in the frick hides a crystal of immortality inside of a high school or hires an architect that includes a 'Chamber of Secrets'?

So no, I can't take thought out actual arguments serious in this universe.

I will say that as I read the books, I thought there was definitely a spark between Harry and Luna. I never really thought there was anything going with Ginny.

You're both wrong. Does nobody understand how the universe works? God. Hermione should have ended up with Luna.

It's a solid plot line that I could get on board with. Honestly I could have been happy if Harry had finished with Luna or Hermione, each for different reasons.

Luna would have been good for the fellow outsiders play, as you said, but Hermione's drive and ambition also really matched up well with him. Driven, goal-oriented people like to surround themselves with those of similar discipline in my experience.

Honestly though, the true tragedy is the Hermione-Ron arc.

We witnessed Harry outgrowing his childish, prankster self throughout the story, becoming a serious man. Ron, meanwhile, struggles with leaving those things behind. It's even underlined in later works when he quits a "real job" to work at the joke shop. Why a strong, independent woman like Hermione would go for him makes absolutely no sense. If she's not with Harry AT LEAST don't put her with Ron.

I've read the series like 4-5 times over, but haven't read a book in probably 6-7 years. I recently did a re-watch of all of the movies on HBO and was just in shock at how horrible almost every plot is.

Like just imagine being a parent and sending your kid back to Hogwarts after Dumbledore was murdered there. Like if that isn't bad enough, sending them back to the school that is now led by the guy who murdered the old headmaster

Regardless, I don’t see an argument from anything but frothing fanboys on why Harry shouldn’t have ended up with at least one of these two. I respectfully disagree that Harry should have ended up with Hermione, but it’s a fair argument. Ginny is just the worst written character and there is no chemistry. I mean my God she’s awful.

Couldn't agree more.

It felt like Rowling just said, aight, Harry deserves a happy ending too, let me just throw Ron's sister to him. Doesn't matter that nothing's led up to it, I owe my readers some fan service.

How about in the first movie in the series when Dumbledore warns everyone that horrible death awaits on the third floor right hand corridor?

And Voldemort is actually pretty nice to Harry:

Think about it. He never sends anyone to try to kill Harry during his numerous visits to Hogsmeade. No elaborate traps or ambushes; I guess that would just be rude.
