OP used the term "murderers row" to describe those 4 movies.

The fugitive was absolutely awesome but the others are mostly forgettable.

Air Force One is hardly a forgettable movie. It got decent reviews from critics and was the fifth highest grossing movie of 1997.

throw in American Graffiti,

I'd never seen this. Tried watching it last week and couldn't get into it. Bored me. Turned it off after 25 mins. Is it still worth watching, or is it a movie that doesn't hold up 40 years later?

TBH I always get Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger confused. Actually I saw both for the first time last year and I don't remember much from either. So to me they are kinda forgettable I guess.

Sum of All Fears was the best Jack Ryan movie IMO.

American Grafitti is a classic and should be watched all the way through. It's about trying to find yourself and ending one phase of life and venturing into the unknown. I always viewed it as a 60s Dazed and Confused except more serious.

Try to give it another shot, the cast alone is stellar and the final act is very very good. Yes, it's a bit plodding but I think it still holds up.

Royals and drugs, respectively.

I never could get past their betrayal of the book it was based on.

Patriot Games is great and Clear and Present Danger is solid. Air Force One is fun but objectively not a very "good" movie in terms of writing and plot.

I wonder if his total box office take is top five of all time when you adjust for inflation?

Amazing that's he's arguably over 40 years into career at or near the top of Hollywood:

1973 American Graffiti
1974 The Conversation
1977 Star Wars
1978 Force 10 from Navarone
1979 Apocalypse Now
1979 The Frisco Kid
1980 The Empire Strikes Back
1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982 Blade Runner
1983 Return of the Jedi
1984 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
1985 Witness
1986 The Mosquito Coast
1988 Frantic
1988 Working Girl
1989 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
1990 Presumed Innocent
1991 Regarding Henry
1992 Patriot Games
1993 The Fugitive
1994 Clear and Present Danger
1995 Sabrina
1997 The Devil's Own
1997 Air Force One
1998 Six Days Seven Nights
1999 Random Hearts
2000 What Lies Beneath
2002 K-19: The Widowmaker
2003 Hollywood Homicide
2006 Firewall
2008 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal
2009 Crossing Over
2010 Extraordinary Measures
2010 Morning Glory
2011 Cowboys & Aliens
2013 42
2013 Paranoia
2013 Ender's Game
2013 Anchorman 2:
2014 The Expendables 3
2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens

#1, actually.

LINK

ETA: Eddie Murphy is one spot higher than Tom Cruise. I would not have expected that.

I think Regarding Henry was probably his best acting performance. That movie always gave me the feels.

And I'm pretty sure he was the top draw in the 1980s - but don't quote me.

Forgotten in all his chameleon, fat suit, animal talking, talking animal roles after that, that Murphy was, at one time, the hottest young actor in Hollywood - for almost a decade.

My guess is that being part of Shrek is what places Murphy ahead of cruise on the all time gross list. I think Cruise was easily the hotter commodity in the 80s.

Shrek was almost half a billion gross, so there is that concern.

"Box office draw" probably hurts Ford more than either Murphy or Cruise - Ford was support in both Empire (1980) and Jedi (1983) - which are massive box office performers, but with Mark Hamill in the lead. "Draw" is based on contemporary surveys of theater owners, so while subjective, it is difficult to argue with the methodology:

Neither Cruise nor Murphy show up until 1983 (1980 - 1982 had the residual, 1970s hangover with Burt Reynolds grabbing the top spot) - then, from 1983 through 1989, Murphy shows up every year, Cruise does not rise to the top until the back half of the decade

Murphy

1983 - #2
1984 - #4
1985 - #2
1986 - #2
1987 - #1
1988 - #2
1989 - #7

Cruise

1983 - #10
1986 - #1
1987 - #2
1988 - #1
1989 - #2

He's been in 4 shrek films which have grossed close to $4 billion.

Tom cruise has done mission impossible but that franchise hasn't grossed as much as Shrek
