First 18 minutes was amazing!

I do not know much of the mythology of the games. I played them when I was 12 but always fast forward through the cutscenes so never got the whole story. But a lot of the die hards are not big fans of it since they are altering the lore of the games.
Basically the show is a new take on the story of the games.

comparing some other series as of late that they've altered a good bit (Witcher, WoT) the alterations weren't THAT BAD, but i was a bit disappointed in the last 40 minutes and political posturing instead of action. i get that there's such thing as a budget, but Halo is a series where you kill aliens, plain and simple. You don't have to pretend the Master Chief and the UNSC were always altruistic, but they spent way too much time trying to muddy those waters.

while the FX could have been better, it was a pretty dope opening scene. that's what i wanted. minus the...

child genocide with plasma guns.
and MC with his helmet off for extended periods of time.

Straight up BS 21yrs of Halo video games and we have never seen an adult MC face and they just have him pull his helmet off like that's not a thing!

It’s not just a new take, it’s pretty much not at all Halo.

They came out and said they didn’t even look at or talk about the games when they were making the show.

I was out once they said that

I’m actually ok with it since they aren’t taking the games into account. It’s something different altogether. And I won’t be constantly pissed about them getting things wrong.

I don’t like MC removing his helmet either, but the actor has to be able to show his face.

Pretty good episode. I always thought the “Master Chief doesn’t show his face” thing to be dumb. I’m glad they did it in episode 1.

I haven't watched the show yet, but if you read all the books in the extended universe you really get the takeaway that the UNCC, especially ONI - ESPECIALLY section 3 were pretty shitty toward the end of the Outer colony rebellions. Everything about the Spartan program from how they kidnapped the kids, replaced them with faulty clones, genetically modified them, and conditioned them for war from childhood was bad enough. When you realize they did all of that before they even knew they covenant existed it makes it worse. They developed Spartans to kill humans, not aliens.

Like I said, not always altruistic.

I think they were done for strategic covert missions to “save life.” Meaning go kill small groups instead of bombing them.

If I remember correctly, humans stood a chance against the covenant if they could face them head on in combat but they usually just nuked a world.

disclaimer: I read three of the books 10+ years ago and haven’t played a halo game since Halo 3 came out.

Bungie officially announced they did this so gamers of all races could identify with him. But, if you read the books you know he is a white dude.

There's a second trilogy of books that dived neck deep into how horrible the Spartan Program really was. It's a fascinating perspective if your a lore need. I can't remember the ne of the series but the first book is Glasslands. It's an indirect sequel to Ghosts of Onyx, which is an indirect sequel to Fall of Reach / Flood / First Strike.

yep and they showed his face, partially, at the end of Halo 4 on legendary. I don't mind that they're showing his face... All the other spartans take their helmets off.

Those are the 3 I read I think.

Those cover MC’s training (fall of reach,) Halo 1, and in between Halo 1 and 2 right?

Right. If your interested, pick up Ghosts of Onyx next before the newer trilogy. All 4 are fun reads and really fill in some gaps.

It wasn’t so much race (otherwise Sgt Johnson wouldn’t have been the only black guy) as much that they wanted the gamer to feel like a badass super soldier. Create an pretty empty character and have the player insert themselves as him. They did the same thing in Halo Reach

I can understand why the helmet thing might agitate the hardcore Halo fan base.

With that said, I don't mind it. I know Halo is much older, but with The Mandalorian coming out just before Halo started filming and being a huge success I don't think we needed two shows where they main warrior guy refused to take his helmet off.
