For some reason I think "Little Big Man" should be ranked up there- different kind of Western for its time...
Liked any Eastwood western- for TV, I think it was hard to beat "Centennial" as far as TV mini-series go - of course Lonesome Dove for a more modern day acting, etc...
Can't forget Jeremiah Johnson- awesome scenery, acting, etc...

I love Unforgiven, Django Unchained, and Dances with Wolves more than the others mentioned. I haven't seen Once Upon a Time in the West, though.

1. Open Range
2. Unforgiven
3. Outlaw Josey Wales
4. True Grit (original version)
5. Jeremiah Johnson
6. Broken Trail
7. Rio Bravo
8. Silverado
9. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
10. The Searchers
ETA: Couldn't leave off Lonesome Dove (another great western with Robert Duvall)

If you consider yourself a fan of the genre it is an absolute must see.

the searchers or the good the bad and the ugly

Once Upon a Time in the West - has everything I want from a Western.
Great ensemble piece with multiple stories - iconic bad guy, dashed dreams both young and old, the mantra of manifest destiny - using the West as more than just a stage prop to wear Cowboy hats and six-shooters...the complexities and greed of the expansion of the RR and settlements with immigrants and people trying to either get rich, find their way, find a home, begin anew or running from the law.
It's like the Good, Bad and Ugly but with a greater theme and lyrical.
And what tops it, it's not just full of boys with guns...but has Claudia Cardinale. All other Westerns are like Casablanca w/o Ingrid Bergman by comparison.

I like Big Jake and Rio Bravo.
I can watch those over and over along with the Eastwood trilogy.
I need to add Once Upon a Time in the West to my must see list since I'm obviously a Leone fan.

i don't understand how anyone can present a valid argument for listing the original true grit as the GOAT. i know taste is subjective and all that jazz, but that's one of my least favorite movies of all time. my pow pow, who is the biggest duke fan i have (and probably will) ever meet refuses to acknowledge the fact that abortion of a film exists.

One of my favorite and it was perfect for it's time.
Anyone who grew up watching it on VHS loves it.
We all have different perspectives from our different experiences. Kim Darby and Rhinestone cowboy were great.
...and you knew what Wayne was doing - tongue n' cheek playing an exaggerated campy Wayne. It's a fun highly rewatchable movie with Robert Duval putting in a great part.
Far more rewatchable than the Coen's bleak remake..and I"m a Coen fan. Have some fun, watch it.

oh, i've seen it. i just couldn't get into it at all. i thought the coen bros version was much better/darker/grittier, and i enjoyed that.
rio bravo, tmwslv, searchers, sons of katie elder, etc, i like all those. i always forget to list angel and the bad man, that's another one i really like. i was raised on john wayne. i just don't find any redeeming qualities in the og true grit

You do have to do one thing, though (besides realize it was supposed to be the "fourth" movie after TGTB&TU) - you have to be prepared for Hank Fonda as a bad guy - and a bad guy who kills kids, dogs, disabled people, etc, THAT kind of bad guy.
It was a wonderful performance, just very jarring from the Hank Fonda we all know and love.
