I agree with whoever that was who said they didn't like Jon Snow. He is probably my least favorite character in the show. Him coming back to life made him enemy No. 1 to me

I also don't like Dany though. Pretty much anyone who is the odds on favorite or a 'good' character, is someone I hate.

Really hope Euron just wins. Or Bronn.

Well, Bronn is pretty much an everyone's favorite type of character. And while "good" might be a stretch, he's definitely in the loveable rogue category.

That's fair, but I feel like a lot of people would be pissed if that happened lol.

Just once I want a big show to not make most of it's fan base happy and do something truly unexpected.

I'm guessing you weren't a huge Sopranos or Lost fan

I was a massive Lost fan while it was on the air. I was like 10 when the Sopranos aired and tried watching it a few years back but it has not aged very well.

It's like you guessing Jon gets stabbed but guess everyone who stabbed him in the correct order

Yeah. I can see that point of view. To be honest, I think the rep the show (and even the books) got for messing with the tropes of fantasy storytelling was mostly established early on in both.

Things like Ned losing his head, the red wedding, the purple wedding were big shocks to the system. But I think after that both Martin and D&D stuck much more with the conventions.

I think they pulled it off because Martin and then D&D knew from the get go who the long term main characters would be but of course we as readers and the watchers who hadn't read didn't know this. So they could set up people like Ned, Kat and Rob, and even Joffrey, Tywin, etc as major players and then knock them off to upset our expectations.

Now though, it's getting pretty close to the end game. The major characters are pretty much established. I don't think they will or should bring in new major characters and the really big ones they can kill off and still tell their story diminishes.

Martin has stated multiple times this would not be a good vs evil story
my hope is that this still is true but Jon snows story sure is shaping up that way

We will see I guess

That is one of the things that has long interested me about this series - I think the whole way people talked about the series early with upsetting fantasy tropes was overstated (kind of like you said). Maybe a lot of people just didn't realize there was other stuff out there beyond the lotr / wheel of time style stuff, but some were talking like it was this groundbreaking style with essentially these grey characters and main characters dying early. Those series were out there (malazan comes to mind first) and I was always under the impression it would end up as a humans vs. white walker thing. Maybe the books will have a different path but show is certainly going after that storyline to finish up it seems.

Bringing in new characters at this point would be bad. I'm not sure if there is one, but a secondary "major" character that we know well stepping up if like Jon died in this raid or something could be cool if done well.

Jon is definitely getting close to a standard hero trope. He even has the hidden prince thing going. (Sometimes when things about R+L+J come up I involuntarily flash back to the SpaceBalls scene with Lonestar - "I'm a Prince" )

Though he has through the series been portrayed more realistically at times - he's killed a Night's Watch brother to insert himself into the Wildlings, He's lied to the Wildlings for a long time, he's executed people not obeying his orders and hung people who betrayed him, including kids, etc.)

the problem is that Jon died once already
while interesting it backs the story into a corner and removes any further suspicion that he could die again. Yes he might sacrifice himself but that just reinforces the standard trope

it's a problem if the story aspires to more than that

I think it would have been far better to have that scene be at night, but Davos is a smuggler. I think Tyrion was far too noticable and probably should've either dressed like a street urchin or had someone accompany him so he would blend in better.

fair warning to all, sunday's episode has leaked, you may want to just stay away from GoT threads on here, some can't help themselves.
