Speculation:
Crazy scientist bitch tricks TPTB that to save the planet from environmental disaster, the monsters must be turned loose, when in actuality, she wants them to "cleanse" the planet of most humans so her Gaia utopia can flourish.
Godzilla shows up to fricking fix it.

One don't be a dick just because you're thinking the MUTOS were Kamecuros, the mantis kaiju.
The MUTOS were all new from Legendary and actually named in the comics.
Shinomura - kaiju wiki, yes there's a wiki for rubber suit monsters, dont give me that look. its more than wrestling dammit.
And two, calling out Scruffy? Really? Is this what this site has come down to?

To be fair Godzilla movies always have a large human and alien cast along with some small fae here and there. So seeing people be a huge chunk of Godzilla never threw me off.
Bayformers took the spunky human side kicks and went too far though.
ETA
Anyone else watching the Godzilla cartoon movies on Netflix.
I'm kind of a mixed feelings on it. They're setting up for its own King of Monsters with the second one but to make Ghidorah a threat is going to be silly as frick for this version of Godzilla.

that's what it seems like....I'm just wondering what the sales pitch of unleashing the monsters in order to save the planet to get people onboard is

Get some eco terrorists and some end times religious nuts together and you got yourself an apocalypse starter pack.

Does every movie today have to have a female protagonist / main character?

I love mothra. having a giant moth as a villain or a superhero is fricking ridiculous, and awesome.
I have a mothra t-shirt. its sadly almost dead and reserved for work around the house.

On the Monarch website, King Ghidorah is described as "a living extinction event." I think she's going to help release Ghidorah to wipe out humanity, but Monarch will somehow get Godzilla and Mothra to fight him. I dunno who Rodan will side with. He's typically on Godzilla's side, but who knows with this new universe.

I'm tentatively excited...
we're finally at the point where CGI can realistically depict what these monsters would be. And unlike sci fi, there wasn't really an option to use miniatures (ala Star Wars OT).
We might get some truly awe-inspiring visuals, if they do it right.
Hollywood has scared me recently, they've had some sure things that they flat-out fricked up. SW TLJ is one, and then there was the Dark Universe. How do you take a loaded franchise with plenty of good stuff, drop in Tom Cruise for a bump, and still screw it up? Although, to be fair, I didn't think The Mummy was terrible, just kinda bland.

I am an old traditionalist. It's great that they update the oldie monster movies - King Kong, Godzilla, etc. My problem is in that they may get the CGI right, but in the process of making the remake, they tend to lose the initial shock value, characterizations, and story line.
Give me the originals. But I do understand that some may prefer the visuals. Style over substance is today.
