What a fantastic film.

This film captured the evolution of several social/political/economic issues in the 20th century that still resonates today. Gender roles, discrimination, integration just to name a few.

Couple of questions:

Who was the Giant?

Who was the protagonist?

Who was the antagonist?

Sadly, this 'G' rated movie would probably get a PG-13 rating if released today for the racist language and mild violence.

Still can't believe Rock Hudson was gay.

One of my top 10's. I've seen it about 10 times. It's been a few years, might as well go again.

Giant refers to Texas itself, which is the protagonist.

I just assumed it was some kind of reference to the land. Big ranches, big oil, etc.

Liz was 23 years old IRL and she was playing the mother of a 24 year old actress.

Giant (1956) would remain Warner Bros.' highest grossing movie until Superman (1978)

When I was a kid, I asked my mom to take me to see Giant at the drive-in. I thought it was about a monster. She broke the news to me that it was another Liz Taylor movie.

IMHO it's pretty dull when Dean isn't on screen

meh

as I said, I find it boring aside from Dean

And a lot of his performance was improvised. For example in this scene he was just supposed to walk along his new property, but he was pissed off with director George Stevens about something (they didn't get along) so he walked very stiffly, making a big deal out of hitting his marks. It adds a fascinating visual element to the scene.

And at the end, Dean decided to climb the windmill, which was not in the script. But it was so good Stevens left it in, and later added a CU of Dean at the top to match it.

No surprise you're a fan of this new-fangled, mush-mouthed, messy-haired "method acting." Just deliver the lines like they're written and hit your marks, kid.

Dean frankly over-acted in all his movies...especially East of Eden.

I remember wondering when I was a little kid why everybody thought the sausage guy was so cool, because of the rock on song
