George RR Martin: It’s not like I’ve been on a 7-year vacation, I’ve written other things

I know there are a lot of people out there who are very angry with me that Winds of Winter isn’t finished. And I’m mad about that myself. I wished I finished it four years ago. I wished it was finished now. But it’s not. And I’ve had dark nights of the soul where I’ve pounded my head against the keyboard and said, “God, will I ever finish this? The show is going further and further forward and I’m falling further and further behind. What the hell is happening here? I’ve got to do this.” I just got the [Fire and Blood] copy and, holding it in my hand, it’s a beautiful book. The illustrations by Doug Wheatley are great. It’s been a long while since I had a new Westeros book and nobody knows that as well as I do. I know that just as much as the angriest of my hardcore fans. And I have continued to publish other things. It’s not like I’ve been on a seven-year vacation. I have Wild Cards books coming out every six months. But not like this, one that’s entirely my writing. So to finish a book that I’m proud of and excited by was emotionally a big lift for me.

He doesn't know how to finish it. Wrote himself into a corner.

I don't even read the novels but I know no one gives a shite about the spin-off books he's writing.

Especially since a lot of it has already been published in various collections.

People need to realize he's never going to finish it.

There's been a pub crawl, pizza convention, movie fest, opening event at his theater, book signing, etc. about 3-5 times a week for a decade.
I guess he can consider a lot of those events "working" but they sure as $#!t aren't writing the book everyone wants him to write.

No need to ask God. I can tell you right now the answer is no.

Martin has a tendency to let projects sort of peter out. He was very much into his Wild Card books... 30 years ago. That sort of fell by the wayside and his "return" to the series is a few short stories other people wrote and the reprinting of the earlier books.
Writers reach a certain point where they are pretty much done. They might keep churning out books but the tank is basically empty. Jim Butcher is another example of this, he was the best writer alive in the urban fantasy genre for a good long while and turned out best seller after best seller. And now he grudgingly writes a book every three or so years.

I’d respect him a lot more if he just came out and said this years ago. But instead he bitched and cried for years about how he was being unfairly criticized for not admitting he had writer’s block. And demonized fans for even thinking about complaining about it.
frick him.
frick him.

It's never going to be published. He's just trying to distract with these other stuff. The legacy of this series will just be unfulfilled potential.

I’ve read all the books, even before it was a TV show.
I’ve come to realize he will die before he finishes the series.
frick that dude. Just pick a writer to finish it for you.
