Gene Shalit, the longtime film critic for NBC’s “TODAY” show whose walrus mustache and exuberant wordplay made him one of television’s most recognizable reviewers, died Friday, his family said. He was a fixture on the program for four decades.

Long movie. He was probably ready for it to end.

Old picture

From memory: Bryant Gumbell, Gene Shalit, Willard Scott, Jane Pauley, and I blank on the last guy.

Willard was an interesting guy. He was supposedly the first Ronald McDonald and turned down payment in stock for the gig. He was also famously disliked by Gumbel for celebrating centenarians on his weather forecasts.

Gene Shalit would have probably enjoyed the birthday wishes from Willard.

He was partially responsible for:

1. Meryl Streep: "If there is such a thing as a world class actress, it IS Meryl Streep". I think he said this twice.

2. Woody Allen abandoning comedy and becoming a 4th rate Ingmar Bergman, he called Interiors "A masterpiece... A work of art."

That's what I'll always remember him for

I blanked on John Palmer too...

And Bryant Gumble may have been good, but he definitely missed out on the personable and affable character of his late brother Greg.

RIP. Best Fro in the business. When I was little I remember him reading a letter he received. The writer of the letter thought his name was green salad :)

I could've sworn that there was news that he died earlier in 2026, but clearly I'm misremembering. This has to be how Mandela Effect stuff gets started.
