As (briefly) a leading man who was a highly capable character actor - Hackman (along with Hal Holbrook (who will be 93 in a couple of weeks) were 2 of my favorite actors of the 70s through the 90s - guys who typically played some variant of themselves (which most great actors do), but brought a lot of nuance - and were both fantastic in the film, The Firm.

Hackman was a scene stealer of the highest order - think of the first Chris Reeves Superman movie. He didn't really get noticed until he was damned near 40 (Buck in Bonnie and Clyde), but was recognized relatively quickly after that as one of the best working screen actors in The French Connection.

While his best supporting role was likely in Unforgiven - Hackman was another one of those cats who worked a lot, but never phoned it in. (ETA confused blending of two movies redacted). A brilliant performance (along with one of Denzel's best) in the criminally underrated Crimson Tide.

I saw Gene Hackman at the movie theatre the night I saw Unforgiven. I don't know what he was doing at the movie theatre, but he was in Memphis filming The Firm. Later that night I had a dream that he shot me out of a tree in the Old West and then as I was kicking on the ground he came and stood over me and finished me off like Clint Eastwood did to Little Bill

Still disappointed he was never hired as LSU's basketball coach.

I loved him in The Quick and the Dead even though the movie sucked.

It would be great if just before shooting you, he said, "You really deserve this, you know."

Every major character in Get Shorty it could be argued is sneakily each actors best performance/role of their career. Hackman is obvious because of how great of a lovable bufoon Harry Zimm was, but his other work is so good who knows...Travolta, (although I love Vincent Vega) is at the absolute top of his game as Chilli Palmer (Be cool not withstanding).

Dennis Farina should've gotten an Oscar nomination...It's Renee Russo's best role... it's Delroy Lindo's best role....It's perhaps Danny Devito's best work and a role he was perfect for, it's A+ pre-Sopranos Gandolfini, and it's one of the most rewatchable and quotable films ever made. I just wish it got more recognition for how superb of movie it is.

If you ever get a chance watch Scarecrow. I think he said it was his favorite movie roll. It's him and a young Al Pacino. I wish they made more movies like it.

Scarecrow.

Turner Classic showed it one night, last year. It's an intense, pretty crazy watch. Here's a youtube video of the TCM intro, and outro from Ben Mankiewicz

take the terrible film The Pelican Brief - even Denzel and Hoffman were a little weak in that movie, but not Hackman.

I think you are blending Runaway Jury with Pelican Brief...which I though was actually a pretty decent film.

You're absolutely right. It was Cusack in Runaway Jury and Hoffman/Hackman.

Pelican Brief was "okay" - Denzel and Julia Roberts. I've only seen those films once each. I guess it was the New Orleans thing that connected them in my mind (as well as the Grisham thing).
