It’s weird that he only killed one of the three dogs though.

the dead dog was locked up without water, the other two had access to outside because the front door was open

From what I can make out of the info I have seen my guess is he died of natural causes and the wife was so distraught she Edie Sedgwicked herself.

On a side note what in the hell is a mud room? Was he raising pigs in his house?

Even suburban houses have these. It’s typically a room inbetween the garage or outdoor entrance where you can take off or clean off your shoes, hang your coat, etc. If you live up north it helps keep all of the snow on your shoes and clothes from getting in your main living area.

And I bet where you're from doesn't see well below freezing temperatures for months a year with snow and ice to deal with almost daily during that time.

Did he have any recent neurological conditions such as dementia/Alzheimer’s etc?

Back porch is usually open or screened/glassed in and is more of a quasi outdoor space.

Mudrooms are indoor spaces. Typically have a bench to sit on for taking off shoes/boots, hangers for hanging costs, floor level cubbies for storing shoes.

This seems most likely. He died of old age, she was so emotionally distraught she killed herself, and one poor dog was trapped and expired later.

No evidence she off'd herself, is there? Reported that none of the meds were the type that would snuff out a person if they were taken to excess.

Couple of houses I lived in while growing up had 'mud rooms', and were exactly as described. A room off of the garage, with a closet and place to put your shoes before you come into the living room.
