personally I think he knew he hadn't achieved victory at that moment because the wall was still in his way. this time the wall was down. The last 3ER was before him. This was the true beginning of the end for the NK and he got caught slipping. He was still a human orginally. Humans and ego don't mix well.

I don't understand how it wasn't obvious she was hiding in the tree she left the room with the red woman well before the Night King even landed and the weirwood wasn't surrounded by the dead

She came from behind the NK.
The NK walked straight from Theon to Bran.
There was no fricking tree in that same path. The tree was behind Bran FFS.

Ummmm he did? The 3ER was hidden to the NK until Bran effed up and was marked by him. The NK then immediately went to kill the 3ER (which he did) but Bran was able to escape now having become the 3ER.

No one except some weird fringe fans ever cared about the Night King. No one was ever supposed to be concerned about him. He was never a main villain or even plot point. Him and all the white walkers were just unimportant background noise. Forget the Nights Watch and the wall and the opening scene of the pilot and the name of the series and the tag line for the show and all of the marketing for the show bearing the face of the Night King and the fact that currently right now on HBO go the GoT icon is the Night Kings face. None of that matters.
What this show is really about is Cersei Lannister and who gets to kill her and please don't ask a stupid question like why isn't it Arya at night.

Its a weirwood tree and it looks like a live oak where the branches spread out. there was nothing in that shot that told me the night king could in no way be under a branch that was spread out in multiple directions from the trunk that bran was right besides
