Their budget for everything non-GoT is so low that they can't afford to put out consistent quality programming the way they used to.
they just dropped $100M on season 1 of Vinyl, bro
they're spending a metric frick ton on Westworld, too

A Duck and Egg prequel would not cost as much as GoT. A lot few characters and likely no CGI.
This. No Dragons or Direwolves in that story. Same for Robert's Rebellion.

I was under the impression that next year is the last.
There are rumors that the producers will split it into two half seasons for a money grab. I certainly hope this isn't the case, but it does appear to be likely.

I hope you're right. As great as this series is, it must come to an end. I want them to tell the story properly which means not to rush or prolong anything. If next season's 10 eps are what's required to properly tell the final tale, then so be it.

and the show got cancelled last week after one season. And Boardwalk Empire got slashed suddenly because of expenses.

eh...let's wait a year and see if it's the next Vinyl or if it's the GoT replacement.

I'm not a GoT viewer, but I really hope that HBO ends its involvement with the show after this series ends. They are investing so much money in the show that HBO's product as a whole is very weak. Their budget for everything non-GoT is so low that they can't afford to put out consistent quality programming the way they used to.
GOT is by far the most popular TV show HBO has ever had so I doubt they end their involment just becuase some people like you want something else.

I'm saying that as an HBO subscriber, they are investing a ton in one show and letting everything else sort of slip since they don't have the budget to maintain quality programming throughout the network.

because it wasn't good and had shite ratings
the show was cancelled when new management took over b/c the old management has created this bad run

that's irrelevant. your point is that GOT is taking money from other shows when it's not
GOT's quality has nothing to do with the failure in quality of the other shows
GOT isn't taking money away from the shows. if anything, it's bringing in more revenue for HBO allowing them to spend 100M on a failure like vinyl

Would be cool to watch the travels when Targaryen rule was at a high point.

think a 2-3 part movie about robert's rebellion would be epic
I don't think you could make a proper trilogy with just two movies, the story is just too complex. Now if you did a four movie trilogy, it would probably work.

My $15/month used to go toward great shows, great fights, great documentaries, etc. Now? My $20/month goes toward GoT and a good show here and there.
I'm glad this comment was down voted into oblivion. Just on Sunday night, you also had Veep, Silicon Valley, and Last Week Tonight. They still have some great programming. I can't think of two better comedy shows on any network than Veep and SV.

Dunk and Egg is the most likely.
Robert's Rebellion, as much as I would love to see prime Robert, would feel very much like another prequel...
Dunk and Egg is set far enough in the past that audience could explore more of Westerosi history...and possibly open up even more older stories...(like Bran the Builder, for example).
Afterall, Duncan's exploits had four pages in The Book of Brothers...so his story is probably the richest to tell.

This I would like to see. More character-driven and less CGI.
Now don't get me wrong-I like the CGI stuff with the wolves, dragons, and giants, but it just eats up too much of the budget.

I'm willing to bet Game of Thrones brings in more money to HBO than it costs. They wouldn't be getting my monthly payment for HBO now without it.

Well yeah because they invest so much in GoT, the rest of their series are meh. shite, boxing used to be a major part of the network but now they're taking a good fight (Crawford-Postol) where both fighters make decent money, and putting it on PPV because they don't want to pay for the fight. It has no business being on PPV but their Executive VP of sports flat out said they don't have the budget for it.
