You are missing one of the greatest HBO shows in this list

That's relative though, isn't it? I though the Ricky Gervais Show was funnier than EB&D for the most part though I know most people wouldn't agree with me

Man I knew it too but that's one I've put off for one reason or another. I still need to finish EB&D first. Idk why but Larry David as an actor just has never appealed to me but I need to give it more than the 2-3 episodes I've seen

Luther and Sherlock (not season 3) are fantastic.

Spartacus

this is the closest to GOT. The hardest part though was adjusting to the new guy when the original Spartacus died from cancer. Lots of money scenes in Spartacus though

Lots of great series already mentioned in here. (I particularly liked Band of Brothers and True Detective).

For a couple not mentioned yet I'd throw out Rome and Lonesome Dove if you haven't seen them yet.

Not fully threaded (although the seasons are, individually) and Season 2 is fairly polarizing, I have to ask if you've watched The Wire.

Sopranos and The Shield would also fit the bill, and you mentioned neither. They're all a balance of episodic and threaded stories - and all tell a relatively cohesive story over multiple seasons.

Those are my top 4 - I'm holding a spot in my Top 5 for GoT - but it has to finish to qualify.

You're exactly like my friend...couldn't care less about anything considered "fantasy," I'm pretty sure he never saw LotR just because it looked stupid to him. I spent three years trying to get him to watch GoT with nary a flicker of interest on his part. His GF finally convinced to him watch a couple episodes, wonder what she had that I didn't. He burned thru the first three seasons, caught up, then watched this past season as it happened. One of his favorites now, and this is a guy with zero geek in him. The show will subvert what you think "fantasy" entertainment is/is capable of.

I've heard this before, and that's why I asked the question. By the way, I do have an imagination and enjoy well written and made fiction of any type. It's just that the two examples I gave seem (from the outside) to be so contrived that it's impossible to suspend disbelief. But I'm beginning to think I may give GoT a go.

It sounds like what you're looking for is something that strings you along enough that you can't stop watching. It's on Amazon, not NetFlix, but 24 is really good at pacing the escalation so you can't stop.

Suppose that you cannot possibly imagine anything more uninteresting than a mythical, medieval story with dragons thrown into the mix. And, as an aside, that you think The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings were shear torture to read, and the movies were even worse.

Would you recommend GoT? I'm serious and not trollng.

Game of Thrones is Political Chess in a fantasy setting. Think of it more like historical fiction than scifi. Would you watch a show on the warring and political infighting of medieval Europe? The pacing is excellent and makes you want to keep watching, through the first 3 seasons I don't recall a single episode that felt like filler. If you aren't offended by gratuitous boobs and blood you should definitely check it out.

I watched all 3 of the LOTR movies just once and while I can appreciate that it's a very well made movie it just wasn't for me. GOT will probably go down as my all time favorite series unless it just completely goes to shite. I promise you, you won't regret watching it

Exactly. The fantasy stuff is mostly background as far as time spent although some huge events involve it.

Also, had to include the above in bold. Yuck.

He's older and may be watching with his wife. I can't see my mom and dad watching Game of Thrones together.
