I realize you're considered the resident ASOIAF expert, but I'd have to disagree with you here. Obviously all this is speculation, and often we only have testimonies of characters to determine fighting ability. However, Robert Baratheon's best friend thought Dayne was better.

Ned said that Arthur Dayne was the best "KNIGHT" he had ever seen not warrior, not fighter, not soldier but "KNIGHT". Being a knight is about a lot more than just being a soldier, especially in the eyes of someone such as Eddard Stark.

Robert was an amazing warrior..... just a pure physical freak and wonder. If anyone could put Dayne through his paces it would be him.

You didn't get the feeling that he was talking about his skills as a fighter/warrior? Selmy and Jaime had a pretty high opinion of him too.

Maybe you can answer this, because I've been thinking about this question as I pondered Robert's prowess...Is it possible that Robert gets too much credit for killing Rhaegar? It seems to me, from his discussions with Dany, that Selmy maybe didn't think Rhaegar was "all that." Robert fought like a man possessed on the Trident, but the battle with Rhaegar was still pretty close.

He was definitely huge and extremely strong...I guess I've just always thought Rhaegar was overrated.

I didn't mean this as a dig...it's obvious you're knowledgeable about the books...you've probably read them at least twice.

I think that was certainly part of it but I think Ned's opinion of a man went way beyond how good he was at killing other men.

Dayne was an absolute assassin behind a sword without a doubt though.

I think Rhaegar's talents fell somewhere between what his detractors say and what his supporters claim. My memory is kind of fuzzy regarding the details of Robert and Rhaegar's fight but if I remember it correctly Robert ended it fairly early and he was wounded not long before at the battle of the bells which he could still have been reeling from.

Robert was huge and extremely strong but he was also blindingly fast. Remember he was an expert boar hunter and even when he was fat and old he never missed until Lancel fed him stronger wine than he was used to.

Roberts speed is what made him deadly. He was as strong as The Hound and as quick as Bronn.

He was basically Khal Drogo in armor....

When I decided to read the books, I never thought I'd be considering reading them again 2 months after I finished.

I almost wish I had never read them until he finished the series...ignorance is bliss.

I've avoided the crackpot thread and pretty much all things ASOIAF until this thread today and now I want to go reread them all again.... I think I have a problem

Darkstar is kinda a wildcard since we don't really see him in action but he's related to Dayne

But to this point he hasn't been worthy of the title Sword of the Morning, and he couldn't even kill a 9 year old girl.

I don't think it's his skills as a fighter that's kept him from the title I think it has to do with his attitude.

And I'm sure if he really wanted to kill the girl shed be dead. In my mind it was a spur of the moment thing he thought to do at the last second while hightailing it out of there

Could you imagine if the Dothraki went to Westeros in season 1 and Robert & Khal Drogo fought each other?

ROUND 2
Arthur Dayne v Khal Drogo
Gerold Hightower v Ned Stark
Blackfish Tully v Barristan Selmy
Gregor Clegane v Sandor Clegane (featured fight)

Jaime Lannister v Strong Belwas
Rhaegar Targaryen v Areo Hotah
Bronn v Red Viper
Dragonknight v Robert Baratheon

I'm torn on the feature fight. I want to say Sandor but in the end I dont think he can stand up to Gregors size and strength

You're welcome man. My insomnia was acting up last night so I decided to tally up the votes so I could keep myself busy.

bullshite Brienne didn't make it to the next round. Also shocked Red Viper made it.

Arthur Dayne v Khal Drogo
Gerold Hightower v Ned Stark
Blackfish Tully v Barristan Selmy
Gregor Clegane v Sandor Clegane (He's got the drive to kill him)

Jaime Lannister v Strong Belwas
Rhaegar Targaryen v Areo Hotah
Bronn v Red Viper
Dragonknight v Robert Baratheon

Tough matchups. Especially Mountain vs Hound and Bronn vs Red Viper. Also put Ned above Hightower because I'm pretty sure Hightower was at the Tower of Joy, so I'm going to assume Ned killed him.

Disagree, I like that the two heros of the War of the Ninepenny Kings get to duke it out.
