Either Chevy Chase in the 80s or Michael Keaton in the 80s

Peter Sellers and Michael Palin

There have been some good one mentioned already, but Eddie Murphy & Steve Martin have to be in the conversation for 80’s and after.
Old school names are Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, & Red Skelton.

i think Michael Keaton is a great comedic actor... multiplicity, beetlejuice, Much ado about nothing, the dream team, and Johnny dangerously are all great roles...
and no, not the best comedic actor of all time.. just want to throw his name out there...
I agree with Chevy in the 80's, Carey in the 90's
as far as the 2000's there is a lot on the same level (and often in the same movie) so I don't think you can name just one.. But Rudd kills me in 40 year old virgin...

I've seen some of each. I just don't like his style. Not saying he's a bad choice.. Just not for me.

Bob Hope. Before my time but his road movies with Crosby were great.

Bill Murray. I'm biased too, but he always makes me laugh my arse off. There are alot of other comedic actors that can make me laugh, but Murray always makes me laugh

for me I'm looking for longevity and a variety of roles, but thats just my criteria
thats why Peter Sellers was my first choice
Bill Murray has also played it as the straight man and comic relief
John Cleese is another
Steve martin, his comedy act was goofy,, his roles have been played more straight
I see that ability in Paul Rudd,
jim carey, jerry lewis( HUGE TALENT) all were just clowns and thats not my first choice of funny

Steve Martin in the 70s. Eddie Murphy in the early 80s. Jim carrey ever since.

Easy call for me: Chris Farley

I look at Jim Carey as the best of the 90's based on the records he broke as being a paid comedian, best selling movies, and original characters... Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, plus his roles in stupid movies were made better by him.. Riddler, the Mask.. an alien in Earth girls are easy...

now that I'm thinking about it... Sasha Baron Cohen might deserve the 2000's.... his characters and off film antics are quite.... um.... unique ...
