I recently sat down with Adam Driver and came away with some news: He and Steven Soderbergh spent two years developing a "Star Wars" movie that Disney ultimately nixed.

I mean. . .what else do you need to show how damaging TLJ was to the brand.

That number shocked me. That's nuts. There has to be some money laundering going on

You must be new to Hollywood Accounting. I'll never understand how the absolute and complete bullshitting of movie profits is remotely legal.

There's a decent Wiki article about it.

I love the one with one of the Harry Potter movies. Order of the Phoenix had a production budget of "$150 - $200 million" and brought in $943 million at the box office. And Warner Brothers claimed a $167 million loss on paper.

Bohemian Rhapsody cost $55 million to make, and made $911 million at the BO. And 20th Century Fox claimed a $51 million loss.

But I think my favorite one is Lord of the Rings: Peter Jackson, a bunch of LotR actors, and the Tolkien estate itself all sued New Line Cinema because they weren't paid properly for the LotR movies. Those cost a COMBINED $281 million to make, and brought in $2.964 billion (with a B) at the box office....and:
quote:

According to New Line's accounts, the trilogy made "horrendous losses" and no profit at all.

You want to know how Hollywood people are rich as frick? This is exactly how. The fact that this kind of shite is allowed is completely ridiculous.

No, I get it. I'm always arguing with people that the numbers being reported are all BS. These corporations are crooks. Still, 600 mil to make a movie is so freaking absurd. You're right, how they get away with this is crazy.

Hadn't read about this one. That is hilarious

Rey was a nice mystery piece which soon went sideways in the most colossal way.

I agree as it started out well but ended up badly.

Kylo Ren's origin story was utterly ridiculous. That never made any sense. Nor did much of what followed.

No reason not to use the Solo twins back story here. It would been a better story of why he turned to the dark side after his brother Anakin died and later the reason Luke wanted him dead is because he killed Mara Jade(Luke' wife).

I always felt they should have had Rey turn to the darkside and Kylo return to the good side.

They’re not all bs. You can estimate pretty well and the studios do put out the budgets. You just have to add in marketing

He’s not talking about the numbers we discuss typically. It’s impossible to show a loss on a $50mm production budget and 900mm gross based on the generally accepted napkin math for movies. That must be from a financial statement with tax implications etc

Eta
As suspected, that case turned on net proceeds vs net profits which is what you generally think of

quote:

He took issue with the computation of net proceeds under Fox’s standard definition rather than GK Films’. As a result, distribution fees, which are typically deducted, ate away at his share.

Most studios have turned to rebranding net profits as net proceeds. This way, the lawsuit alleged, studios don’t have to “reconcile their outsized profits” with accounting statements showing deficits in the tens of millions of dollars.

Fox and the production company used different definitions of “net proceeds” so they could use distribution costs to eat away at his share of profits. He thought net proceeds would be the generally accepted idea of net profit

The lawyers did this to screw him out of getting paid. Doesn’t mean the movie didn’t make money or that net profit is net profit. Net proceeds is a special term in this context

As soon as Luke threw the lightsaber over his shoulder, Hamill should've walked off the set.

To clarify, I'm talking about the budgets being reported and the marketing costs. Studios overestimate the budgets so they get a larger tax credit. WB just did it with Superman. They claim it cost $363 mil so they'll end up getting a big tax break from the UK. They also got tax breaks from the state of Ohio.

Modest tax breaks and they have to spend a certain amount of money, pretty large, in those locales

Maybe they’ll get $50-70mm in tax breaks. $100mm being generous. Hence why it barely made any money
