Meh in my opinion it was better than coke/heroin/insert drug here. They are a different race they should have different reactions to things.

Eating cat food, wth? Storyline, I thought, sucked. Of course they did leave it to where in 3 years there can be a sequel.

Way too predictable, imho.

Besides, not as much into the 'sci-fi' movies as I used to be. Getting older I guess.

Clearly the catfood is representative of a narcotic. You have to remember that this movie is about aprtheid camps in South Africa. It is done with a Sci-Fi element, but that is what the movie is about.

My friend's first comment was:

So how did they learn the languages?

I mean yeah it was 20 years, but I get his point.

I did enjoy the film though. Worth a watch, but I don't want to see a sequel.

Agreed. Just got back from seeing it, and I'm glad I stayed away from reading anything on this board beforehand. Actually hearing that people on here dislike it makes me feel better about liking it

Drinking sour milk fricked up the slags in Alien Nation. It has to be something that's not a human drug. Raw bacon, flat pepsi, cat food, etc. all would have had the same effect in the movie. IMO I don't see the big deal.

Armond White....is that you?

quote:

Film couldn't decide what it would be.

The actuality-video threat of The Blair Witch Project, or unstoppable violence like ID4 plusS pielberg’s otherworldly benevolence:fa ctitiousness, killing and cosmic agape.

This is how cinema gets turned to trash. Just throw everything in a pot and hope something sticks.

There is also the comic book type logic that fuel for a ship somehow possesses the ability to genetically morph a human into an Alien.

Not to mention that the horrible plot which makes no sense in the film and is an insult to South Africa's history of Apartheid. The alien's, possessors of great weapons and technology humans can't even operate, refuse to stand up for themselves and thus ignoring the issues of self-determination that were prevalent in South Afria like at the Soweto's riots

I guess I am more pissed that people are taking this movie for some type of deep, meaningful movie with a social message, when in reality it is just a another Hollywood popcorn flick

quote:

Wikus’ semi-polite attitude is a reversal of the European imperialism that started South African colonization. But the allegory is also misapplied because the prawn, who resent their mistreatment, primarily yearn to beamup back to their Mothership. Blomkamp and Jackson want it every which way:The actuality-video threat of The Blair Witch Project, unstoppable violence like ID4 plus Spielberg’s otherworldly benevolence: factitiousness, killing and cosmic agape. This is how cinema gets turned into trash. Blomkamp and Jackson’s outrageously stupid idea boasts comicbook logic—Wikus gets infected alien fluid and starts to metamorphose into a Prawn Like Me monstrosity. But this cheap, darkhumored pass at empathy disgraces any greater cinematic potential.

I am not sure which is worse...."plagiarizing" on a fricking message board or thinking White's opinions are worth doing so. He is a critical troll..even Ebert has directly called him out. If it is a big film he often takes a contrarian stance.

I mean hell:

" Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is more proof [Bay] has a great eye for scale and a gift for visceral amazement."

Case closed.

I usually do the George Costanza with White. Whatever he says the opposite is probably true.

If he means a lot of stuff blowing up and so much going on in one shot that you can't tell what is happening then he is right.

Holy shite...you're a loser.

Vag...awesome find.

Who gives a shite what it was, the whole thing is just a McGuffin.

I think D9 is the 28 Days Later of the Sci-Fi genre...sort of a new/slightly updated take, and overall very solid movie.
