Academy Award nomination for Best Picture

Yeah, I could see a best director nod due to the size of the project, but yeah, best pic nom was bunk.

that movie lost me at unobtainium. Honestly they couldn't come up with a better name?

Actually I thought that name would be somewhat realistic. The first artificial element that was discovered, after all, was named "technetium", after the greek word for "artificial".

If scientists discovered an element with similar properties to the nigh-mythological "unobtanium", why wouldn't they name it that?

All the 3D TVs and Blu Ray players you're seeing right now are thanks to Avatar.

Is it really? I thought he just changed the way it was filmed? Serious question here because this doesn't seem right at all.

This current era of 3D has been out for a while, I think Superman Returns was the first time they tried to push it on people, but it wasn't until Avatar made a gajillion dollars that all this 3D content and play back technology started being pushed. Coincidence?...

THEN the chances are quite high the movie in question is beyond terrible. Just something I've picked up on.

Psh, Godfather 3D was AWESOME. You could really see Luca's eyes POP! This whole 3d thing terrifies me. Micheal Bay and James Cameron had a couple of decent movies, but now they are considered GOAT by idiot movie goers because of special effects.

I still remember that scene where Richard Harris is strung up.

not the same as seeing it in the theaters w/ 3D

Yes. When watching a non-3D movie at home, I always take the time to bash my head with a hammer and smear vasoline on my TV so I have the same effect.

I had to really force myself to make it through the whole thing.

Can you say "CGI overload"? Oh gee, look, another glowing flower. The mountains float? Of course they do.

I just watched "Battle for Terra" a few nights ago... a very similar movie. "Battle" had good CGI that didn't wear you out, although the story sort of paralleled Avatar's and was as predictable.

These two studios need to take a clue from Pixar: STORY COMES FIRST.
